So now that I'll be a bit more comfortable that the motor is coming together, I am starting to get concerned about the transmission.
It's not a question of IF, it's a question of when. Even with this partial tune, the car buzzes up like a two stroke engine with the pedal 1/2 way down. Pops straight to 6500 RPMs. Anyway, I want to start understanding what to do for a trans when it's time, so when it goes, I can jump right on it and have a plan of action already written. Here's a local place I may shop at tomorrow: http://www.importperformancetrans.com/gmautorwd.shtml Anyone know them? Pete is this a good deal? Check out their 700R? Are they suing the right parts? Pete, would you be willing, do you have the time, to do one for me? I guess my question is, what do I need to look for in a transmission that can handle the HP/TQ my motor puts out. Particular parts or components? I know 600 may be a bit of an exaggeration, however, for arguments sake, lets shoot for a trans that can handle REAL HP, in the 750 ish range. I prefer to have some over head. In case I decide to go spray in the future, or switch some parts to pick up the power I'm leaving on the table..... |

Same situation here but not as bad! Mine is just slipping when I get on it hard then it catches and scoots!!
But its still pretty mushy all over. I need to get it rebuilt and install that nice new converter Pete had built for me. Did yours leave you stranded or did it limp back home with its tail between its legs? I knew this would probably happen to mine, but I figured it would last a bit longer. |

He's in Delaware. Selbyville is a few hours from here, but I never heard of him. The Chesapeake Bay proves to separate us quite a bit from the eastern shore of Maryland and DE. I haven't really started looking yet, but I have a couple local goons that rebuild them all the time with stock components for cheap. I have thought about asking them to rebuild mine with parts from Petes list. The one guy said he'd do mine for $600 I supply the parts I want. I'm not sure how good he is, except he rebuilds a ton of regular daily driver trannys each and every day. So its not like he doesn't know how they go together. I'm kind of scared to go to him because I don't know anything about him and he doesn't do any racing applications, just daily drivers for the regular Joe off the street that needs a cheap trans rebuild. |

Here's the issue, from what I understand is that if you don't build it RIGHT the same thing will happen. I am researching and hearing stories of trans lasting 3-4 months after a stock rebuild. The issue is, do you want to do it cheap? Or do it over? One shop I just talked to said order a TCI from summit and be done with it, they are a good trans, they are $1500. IDK if that's true, I have to run it past Pete and see what he thinks. He charges $500 to put it in, so I'm in it for $2K done. Just a thought. |

The TKO600 is the manual transmission conversion from Keisler. "600" refers to the torque handling ability.
Otherwise, a TH400 with a GVOD would kick ass. |

honestly i wouldn't buy a tranny from a local guy. they really don't have the knowledge to build a 700r4 that will handle what you want. i tried doing the same and just don't feel like they know the tranny's weak points and secrets to making them last.

match that up to the internals on big names like performabuilt(http://www.performabuilt.com), CHP(http://www.cahallperformancetransmissions.com) or Monster(http://www.eatmyshift.com). then make your decision.

John, Glad to hear from you today, but wish it was under better circumstances. I will try to post everything here, so others can benefit from it as well. I wish my new job did not destroy my free time, or I would build your trans for parts price only. It would make a great R&D trans. I do have a few transmissions running around that are working well behind similar combo's. I humbly say that I have built a few that have been very good. The key is blueprinting, moreso than parts selection. Although both are important. Until I can offer up a complete parts list, I wanted to offer the following: 1)Never under estimate the benefit of dealing with someone local, that is qualified. If they have pride, and attention to detail, they can do it. Something to be said about doing handshake deals. 2)Mailorder is fine, but if you have a problem, it is difficult to resolve in a cost effective manner. I personally have never been a fan of mailorder. I have reaped the benefits of it, that is true, but never really understood the nature of such a purchase. 3) Forget warrantees. Realisticly, no one will offer one, and those that do will often find a reason to deny a claim. It is human nature, and fair under the circumstances (big powered auto. 4) The best builder is one that is enthusiastic about the build. I have had too many mixed drinks to offer much else this evening, but shall follow through as promised. Find a good builder and roll the dice. Should be a fun project that hopefully does not break the bank. |

OK, it's 11:45 at night and this guy gets on the PC with me in IM chat. His trans comes with a 1 year warranty but is pricey, $2600. for $2300 I can get a 6 month warranty. He has layaway, which I can leverage to not pay him if the trans fails.. Plus, he's willing to put in writing that he'll give me a year for the 6 month price, or start the 6 month warranty next season, he's willing to work with me. He had a conversation with me at 11:30 at night. He's only 2 hours away or so... Now, does this make him good, or desperate? IDK, PETE, ever hear of this guy? Any good? Hey, BG ,want me to ask about a two trans discount? He seems rather flexible... |

I haven't posted in any of your posts on here or the other forums on since the "I'm this close to giving up" thread. Instead I have just sat back and lurked. My response which you blew off as I'll fix it when it breaks was this. I suggested that with all your new horsepower you better look at your tranny. I mean after all with the motor out its nothing to pull it.You have not had the car running long and already you need your tranny rebuilt. hate to say I told you so but...

So, it broke, and I'll fix it. BFD. I'm not surprised I expected it, just happened a little sooner than I had hoped. Again, BFD. I didn't blow it off, but I had a choice to make. I had so much money to spend and a tranny could not be justified to the wife until it blew up. Period. I never argued that it would, go back and check my posts. My tact is to finish the engine and cross my fingers, or do what so many people do and start collecting all the really cool parts and never get anything done. That's how many builds stall at the bench. |

I'd have to agree with John on this one too! I was in the same situation where I had just enough money to get the damn thing running.
I have a brand new set of ring and pinion and a PeteK converter sitting on the shelf in my garage because I knew I would need those later, I just couldn't do everything at the moment. It has to be a little at a time or it ain't gonna happen in this lifetime. I could have just let it all sit until I had the money to do the whole project but it would have been at least another six to twelve months and I wanted to get the car on the road. I'm gonna do the transmission first, and then even later go back under and do the rear. I know that while the transmission is out the rear should be done to save time, but its not the time, but the money. If only I didn't have other stuff to take care of like a big mortgage and food and stuff I'd get the whole thing done turn-key by a big fancy corvette shop and just wait until it was done,,, hee hee! Take Care |

JSUP, I think I'll be in the same boat eventually. For now my stock trans is surviving. I wonder if the TCI constant pressure valve body would help a stock trans survive? I heard higher line pressure would help keep slippage from starting. Anyone on here know if that is true? If so, I might try one. Would be nice to raise the part throttle shift points some too! Supposedly this valvebody will allow you to do that. Should be nice in even in an aftermarket or rebuilt 700r4.

So BG, here's the story.
I have checked with people who have done business with Performabuilt. Can't find anything bad about them. the deal is the stage III for my car would run $2400 with a 6 month Warranty. Better than others I can find. The kick in the ass is that even after the warranty runs out, if the trans ever breaks, repair costs, including shipping is $975 as long as you own the car. Seems reasonable and more than other people are offering. So I'm giving these guys some serious consideration, but still shopping around. |

John,
As I mentioned on the phone, we had a similar motor in my friends 92 formula. By coincidence, we found a 92 trans in the boneyard, as it was formally a stick car.We used a B&M transpak shift kit. My buddy pounded the dick out of that car, for over 2 years, then sold it to a streetracer near Atco, NJ. I uderstand that it is still running well, after approx 4 years. The recipe was: Pump: Stock 10 vane gm (new vanes) .471 boost valve (stock vette) .283 lo-rev boost valve (stock vette) Transgo no yo yo kit (high rpm spring and hardened vanes) 1 pc 93 and up style stator sealing rings Wide rear stator bushing. Teflon front bushing B&M regulator spring from shift kit Reverse drum: Borg worner frictions orifice plug for aluminum piston .050 clearance Kevlar band Servo: Stock vette .085-.090 pin travel Input Drum: 1 pc sealing rings BW frictions in forwards, and overruns 29 element BW sprag Raybestos Z-Pack with matching GM apply ring (set to .050) 98 and up steel apply pistons Transgo High rev return springs. Stock Gm 4 pinion planetaries Beast reaction shell 2001 and up rollerized stator shaft and bushing Sonnax wide bushing in rear sun gear Lo Roller: BW replacement element BW frictions set to stock stack height New governor gear Rear teflon tailhouse bushing New accumulator pistons White spring in aux valve body NEW seperator plate. GM is discontinued for 1987, so a transgo plate will work well. Valvebody modded as per B&M New 4th pressure switch New 4-3 pulse switch New lock up solenoid Others may agree or disagree, but this combo has worked well for my on high powered stuff with hard 60' times |

I meant you blew me and my suggestion off. AS with anything car related the odds of never getting anything done or getting it put back together are pretty high and we get parts vehicles. I'll also concede that just like politics all of us have different ideas about how to do a build. Me I go for reliability as I like to go for long weekend drives. Maybe it takes me a little longer to complete. I do my projects over the winter so time is not the important thing to me reliability is. As far as the rear ,labor wise its nothing compared to pulling the tranny when the motor was out.It could be done at any stage and still require the same amount of labor Although I don't have to justify anything , she knew my car vice when she met me. She also knows that I like to do things once and be done. She also like to travel with me in the car and wants it to be reliable as well Guess I'll go back to reading your threads , shaking my head and agree to disagree with you |

I provided the list in the event you use a local trans shop.
PBA may agree or disagree with my recipe, and since they do it for a living, they should build something better than I could. Warrantee sounds very good also. |

It is very similar to my build, but with a bit more "bling" 5 pinion planetaries are not nescessary, and neither is the servo. Money added to the budget not needed, in my opinion. I would never use a 13 vane pump. I have never had a 10 vane failure, but have seen many 13 vanes pop. |

So basically you're ok with it outside the 13 vane pump and planetaries? I'll ask to ramp them back and see if I can save some money. And yeah, the warranty seems pretty good. |

I personally would not run the 13 vane pump in anything, including a 6 cyl daily driver. The 5 pinion GM planetaries are fine. Overkill, but fine. If he requires them for the warrantee, no harm or foul, just lightens the wallet a bit.
Aftermarket 5 pinion planets are junk with a capital J. Avoid them at all costs. |

I am trying to learn what I can, I'm thinking that since the car will be stored for the winter, I can save some money over the winter and do this in april. |

I myself would go to the GN site's, and see what they use. Go see how they beefed up there 200R4 to take over 800 hp.
