Have a friend bringing over his 96 CE (LT4) monday.
Supposedly the heads were ported and 503 (502?)cam put in
. He got smacked for 5k by some shop and never got a flow sheet as requested to see what he got for his money. Hes kind of new at this and trusted the shop; I was backed up at the time and couldnt meet his time deadling (nothing new) so it is what it is

Anyway according to him they never touched the intake so when its brought over Im going to pull that off and port it to match. Why they left it alone makes me suspicious, that makes 0 sense unless they just did bowls and took advantage of the guy.

Im guessing the 1256 gasket is the one to use or?
I know theres a larger GM gasket but somethign tells me Im not going to need something real big.

His dyno afer H/C with stock tune was 330 rwhp, 365rwhp/328rwtq after tuning fwiw.

I don't think his numbers are far off. He probably can pull more out of it depending on what his complimentray mods are.

Its not unusual for some guys to not port match the intake in the LT1, however it is usually recomended. Mine was significantly ported by LE, but he has lots of customers that just stick a factory top on it.

What other mods did they do? injectors, throttle body? For $5 I'd expect a little more than just a heads and cam swap. Headers? Fuel Injectors? I know you know all this stuff.

Not sure about the gasket

Dont know if he did injectors or not, not sure he knows.

*** Edit *** Company name removed. - bogus

He just got off the phone and now the intake is supposely done also. ".
Think Ill just pull the throttle body off first and see if anything has been done and go from there. Hate to waste the dudes money for to tear the intake off if it doesnt need it.

Guess what Im looking for is the stock LT4 and next size up intake gasket PN

no lt1 gasket will work without covering the port.. you need the gmpp 12367777 gasket. it won't cover the port at all and will allow room for porting.

Only way it will work, unless you want to start cutting your own gaskets.

you could use a 1205 or 6 and punch new mounting holes in them.

Well, got it apart today, I thought 328 rwtq was low also.

They used a GM LT1 gasket which covered easily 3/8" of the top of the port.

Kind of disappointed at what was found, pics added below

Wow. I would have stopped right there... then contacted the shop and given them a chance to make right.

As it stands, the pictures are good, but the parts would be better.

This is what he needs to do:

1. Take all photos and print them, in sequence - ALL photos, with time stamps printed on them. Leave no doubt.

2. Compose a very legal sounding letter, outlining what work was supposed to be done, in addition to what the tuning process discovered, and why this step was taken (lack of faith, etc).

3. Take your comments, Ron, and use them as the expert witness. Which is what you are.

If help is needed with the wording, let me know.

4. Submit all documentation to the shop in question and give them a chance to make right. They are the contractor here, they have recourse to their subcontractor, so give them a chance to make this right.

I removed a reference to the shop name. This is to protect the confidentiality of the process. If it falls flat, so be it, then we inform the public.

Try this

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-te ... ket-porting-lt4-pics.html

If you cant view it...

His ported (?!) intake he paid some shop to do.

LT1 gasket they stuck on his LT4 heads

LT1 gasket I had was still too small. 1206 beind it.

Wound up trimming some off the top of the 1206 and making holes to match

Gave his intake the royal treatment and a little more

Spent a ton of time working his throttle body housing front and rear

All back together......

Nothing covering it now, fits like its supposed to. Funny thing is its from a gasket that was never meant to be on there although it too required some trimming.

Whats a bummer is noone carries C4 parts.

No gaskets (even valve covers), TB, etc.

The TB gasket was the original (cant believe they left it on) and tore when we took it off. Of course it was special order only so I had to make one out of gasket paper. I had remembered having some TB gaskets from some old TPI kits I had years ago, dug through them and finally found 2 of them.

One thing I will say about the LTx motors:

I hate the water pump Opti setup but man, compared to working on a TPI which BLOWS the LTs are so much easier to pull intakes, etc etc on it isnt even funny. I was waiting for some part of this to be effed but it never happened.
To me thats the saving grace of the LT cars.

What sucks is the OP spent a lot of money for a high buck shop hoping he'd get what he payed for and still......Sucks seeing that.

Just spoke with the shop that did the work, apparently only a port match was promised on the intake. Solves that mystery..Head work still lwft much to be desired but it is what it is .

As far as how it runs much to my surprise the midrange picked up what felt like quite a bit, dont know about top end, the silicone only had about 8 hrs dry time so it wasnt run up high. Throttle repoinse stayed the same, that was a concern .

My guess is it may not be worth much on a stock motor but once modded will help.

There were a lot of shortcuts taken, thats for sure. There was never a flow sheet given even after being asked so who knows where hes really at.
In the end the big band-aid is on and the car runs stronger now. Doubt it will make a huge difference but at least its noticeable. Nothign worse than spending money and being disappointed.

So let me get this straight...you have bigger ports yet throttle response and midragne picked up quite a bit.

Just wanted to point that out, as we are constantly told differently.

Nice work CV. Based on those results seems you did a great job.

Was the shop pissy with you?

Throttle response felt (SOTP) felt the same, no better no worse. Portmatched or not you can only get XX amount of air through the intake port. THey were opened up but not "hogged" as some would say all the way through. There is a lot of tapering and shaping as the port gets closer to inside of the plenum...Floors and roof got some attention to. No need to make them "giant" to move some air, more than one way to skin a cat.

Exactly, that's all I'm sayin. When an example comes along that dispels a myth, we should recognize it. It helps us learn.

They were bigger than what you started with, and no appreciable change. Good enough.

Wow... thanks, I'm flattered! We should get this wrapped up pretty quick. One thing I will say without getting into a big discussion... I have done probably 10 plus 421's. 383's are the only engine I have done more of than 421's. And this engine will be a very fun engine to drive. Great throttle response, great part throttle torque, decent milage, and still pull down some good top end numbers. When you go with the bigger heads 220cc+ and more cam, the car will be faster, but it comes with a price. From my experiance, the bigger cam/head motors make more power above 4500rpm, but give up 20-30 hp and 40 ft/lbs torque everywhere below 4500 rpm. And for a street car, it's not a bad way to go. I guess good streetability is different for everybody. My 450 is streetable, but I wouldn't want to take it on any sort of a trip. With a 252/260 solid roller, a spool, and Et streets, I drive maybe 10 miles to the track and home. It's faster than Ricks, but you give up real drive it anywhere streetability for all out power. Sure we could put some bigger heads on it, maybe more cam, but it will do what Rick wants it to do the way it is.

PS: sorry if we got off topic.

I can only imagine how a motor like that would pull, he will be in hog heaven. Sounds like he found the right guy to do it, too.
