Golen Engine Services 383 LT1 ATI Procharger Install - Large And In Charge

Using the tuning expertise of Brian Herter at PCMforLess, Golen broke in the motor naturally aspirated and made a few full pulls. Despite the low compression, the motor made a healthy 432 hp at 5,800 rpm and 436 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm, but with the addition of the blower, output climbed to 707 hp at 5,500 rpm and 694 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm using only 93-octane pump gas!

I'll be using less boost on mine, but I'll have better flowing heads.

From what I understand, head flow has far less impact on forced induction engines, so I would not expect any significant gains as a result.

What do you plan to run for boost?

It makes 13psi on a stock LT1

With the better flowing heads, cam and being a 383 projected is about 7psi

That should be a 50% gain in hp, does that make sense?

that should be pretty close. with the totally built motor and it looks like you are using quite a healthy cam. what compression ratio are you running? 10:1?

Can you run a blower with 10.X:1? please say no. I was under the impression blowers liked 8.X-9.5 ish.

Low 9:1 SCR works well in blower applications. You should remember that the lower the SCR, the "lazier" it will feel when not under boost. Most people who add blowers to street cars have no "real" boost until above 3500-4000 RPM. 8:1 with a street blower set-up would make for a real "dog" on the street.

I run 9.4:1, but have 8 lbs boost coming in under 3000RPM and 15 psi in by 4000RPM.

Interesting...

On the stock LT1, Procharger has an 8psi listed for 55-60% gain.

procharger does 8lbs of boost on stock lt1's which are 10.4:1 stock. with the better combustion chambers of AFR's i don't see why he couldn't run that compression especially with a 290 cam, it would lower his dynamic CR and i would imagine it would be a serious engine..

brian-
are you pulling the trigger on that 383 or are you going to hold off for a bit? can't remember.

I have about 10.5 compression. Now I'll have to get a blower, just another upgrade down the road...

Yes.
I was going to put the blower and heads on the stock bottom end, but I'd be making way more power than it could handle.

The tune will have to be "spot on" to be able to survive 10.5:1 SCR and a blower. It can be done, but it is not forgiving...

And a blower is just not a bolt it on proposition. It involves a thoroughly thought out combination to extract big power. Nothing (and I mean not one support component) remains untouched when you have a larger cube engine and a blower.

With your combo, you should definitely see 600HP with a blower, which you will find to be quite unmanageable on the street.

Thanks.

The reason I mention it is Greg Caroll of Caroll Supercharging, Blowerworks, is tuning my car. He said at one point "we have to put a blower in here when we're done"....1/2 joking....I said, no problem, again 1/2 joking.

I am confident Greg could set it up, however, in the scheme of spending money, I'd rather have brakes first, which will require rims.

But I will admit, it has been in the back of my mind..

I asked Musi to over build the bottom end, he says good to 1000 HP.

But like I said, budgetary considerations will prevent me from doing such, for now.

He'd definitely be the one to do it.

You'd probably need to put a YSI on it to feed that beast.

But you'd have quite the ride!

Is that rating at the rear wheels or crank? Just asking.

I can't wait to see how long those stock rings will last on that motor, Brian. It should be interesting.

ah, you are right. I missed that post.

The last I had read was that he was going to put the stuff on the stock block... hence my comment.
