Aaron....looking at your combo....what is your quench distance? Are you happy with it or do you wish you had done something different?

Sorry guys, I have been in Brazil lately, and don't read these forums while on the road.

I run right at 0.042" quench, so I am more in the traditional camp. But I will say that the car is sensitrive to the tune. You do not want to miss the tune when you are at 30 psi.

As far as what I would have done different:
1) I would probably use the lower angle valves (i.e. read as 18°, 15°, 13° heads / intake / pistons). I have a complete 18° set-up and an SB2.2, just have never put them in service.
2) I would have went TC vs SC. I have had TC and SC cars, just never really turned up the wick on the TCed stuff. In the last 2 years, I have had several TC'ed GSX-R1000s, with my latest combo being right at 340WHP in a 350lb bike. The potential of the TC is unmatched.
3) Would have turned the TB sideways (as in over to the R side of the car) and packaged this A2W IC that I have had sitting for a few years. This has 4" inlet and outlet and would handle the power of this combo. I have never really gotten comfortable with the xxOH injection. IC is reliable.
4) Possibly a different SR cam. Currently right at 0.670" at 248/254 @ 0.050". But it sure does justice to the name of the car, "Miss Nasty".

The SC route worked well for my goals, and I really don't see me messing with this combo at this point. It makes way more power than you ever need on the street and does decent at the track (traps over 160). If I really got it ever to hook and break my previous best of .04 (at a 1.72s 60'), it will probably break lots of stuff.

I am content with it for now.

Sorry about the late response, but have been away. Headed out to tour Latin America again next week.

I ran the FelPro gaskets with ARP bolts for a long time with great success (18 psi). I also ran right at 9.6:1 SCR.

My current combo runs ARP studs with just over 9.3:1SCR and I am just slightly over 3Bar, and yes, I am running just a bit blind during certain times of the year.

I will agree with much of what is posted above, the tune needs to be close to correct all the time when you are running the higher SCRs. You could be far more lax with the tune if you started with a lower SCR. But you would also have a lazy car, off boost.

Build the combo with boost that starts to come in at the lowest RPM possible and tune for that combo.

I do not have any brackets, but am more than willing to share my expertise for others to follow the same path to run boost without belt slip. ProCharger has options that make this a reality.

What all have you done to your '85 to deliver almost 500FWHP? Just curious.

If I do go with a D1 Procharger, and spin it to it's max at my max (65000 impeller speed at my 6500 RPM redline), about how much boost would it make on my setup that I described above, figuring no intercooler, just water/meth? I know there is no definite exact answer at this point but I'm wondering if it will be like 15, 18, 20, or more? Wondering if I will need to pulley it down to less than the max impeller speed.

This is a highly subjective question, as it depends upon your complete intake tract. The more restrictive the intake tract, the more the boost (not necessarily good on it's own merit). Boost does not necessarily equal HP.

The more important question is how much flow (CFM) can I push into the engine, if everything is ideal. The answer is 1400CFM assuming MIS. However, you do not want to run MIS at max RPM, unless you are fairly certain you are not going to overspeed the blower more than ~5-7%. I usually recommend that people set max RPM at 90-95% MIS.

The D1 head unit (1400CFM) with everything else perfect is capable of right at 800WHP.

I hope this helps.

An F1R would be a good candidate, but requires all custom brackets. It also requires rework of the hood frame.

For 12 psi on a mild 383, will not require 80lb/hr injectors, but I would recommend a better pump.

Your times sound close to mine when I left the bottle and moved to the SC route. Went through several iterations, but the car remains with the R-series blower.

If I were ever to do more, it would definitely be the TC route. Much experience on the TCs on bikes.

Best of luck in your quest for FI.

How much boost? That seems like a lot of spark advance, unless you are running some really inefficient heads, or have something special for the cam.

Remember, you can loose power on the upper end with more advance than the combo truly needs.

I disagree. There are lots of areas where ProCharger could improve on known issues.

Once installed, however, it will allow the OP to learn as they improve upon ProCHarger's design.

I sent one (tranny plus OD with driveshaft stub inserted)out to CA a while back. It was $400 plus shipping. The shipping was like $155 (quite heavy), and I built a really nice crate for shipping from TX. It was to be an "on the shelf spare" for the gent.

Just an idea of pricing. And sold on the CF classifieds.

Some think that the C4SP will cause TQ issues, but I have nothing but positive results from mine as well. However, as a word of caution, most using the C4SP are larger cube engines.

.300........214..........208.........-6
.400........265..........264.........-1
.500........298..........304.........+6
.600........315..........325.........+10
.650........318..........325.........+7

Pretty decent #'s if you ask me.... where else can you get an aluminum cylinder head that flows over 300 cfm by .500 lift and 325 by .600 for 2 grand ? I flowed a little higher, but was at the stall point for them.

Exhaust:

Lift.....advertised.....actual......difference
.200........120..........114.........-6
.300........167..........165.........-2

.600........238..........232.........-6
.650........241..........236.........-5

What is amazing on the above, is that the exhaust ports are rated with a 1 7/8" pipe as most are, we didn't use a pipe extension..... as most know that play with this stuff, if you do not use a pipe, your numbers will be hurt by somewhere around 10-20 cfm at any given lift. Thus, I am very happy with the exhaust as well.... if you're conservative, add 10 cfm per lift above for my real numbers.

I didn't pour them, but Tony said the AFR 227 comp eliminators usually pour in that 222-224 area......

In my opinion, I think this might be the best street/strip cylinder head made for a big cube sbc dollar vs cfm.

Nice numbers! I am glad that they were quite respective relative to the AFR advertised numbers. Are you in Houston now? If so, we can have an offline discussion regarding the Faerman Racing on Pinemont.

Again nice numbers.

My experience is that the intake can be done, but the exhaust can not be done in the factory seat (1.56" exhaust max). At the point that you are cutting out the factory exhaust seat, you might as well replace the intake with interlocking seats, and then you can go 2.05/1.60. But once you have the new seats, and larger valves, you are really re-working the bowl area, and it tends to be more cost effective to go with a good aftermarket head.

Aftermarket heads have advanced tremendously in the past 20+ years (113 introduced in 1988).

Will,
Thanks for the info. I knew there was an AFR head that was available that was bigger than what I ran that required considerable mods to make it work with the MRII. I had looked at bigger heads, but decided for my goals (with large boost) that the AFR's I had selected would work fine.

Thanks again for clarifying.

Beach,
Any thoughts on using shaft rockers? To me, this is the key to longevity in a large SR cam application. I know that you are going HR, but I feel certain that the cam will be decent and the shaft rockers may give you that added insurance (plus accurate valve movements due to increased valvetrain stability).

Again, nice heads!

Will,
You should not have to drill the MB, as you will find that the idle is very sensitive to the amount of gap on the throttle blade. You can adjust the IAC and just leave the throttle blade slightly cracked to get to your idle quality. I found when the "flap" is closed that the IAC has great difficulty in controlling the idle level steady. I have a minimum opening set in FAST, and the "flap" open a bit. This may be due to my cam as well.

Best of luck with getting it installed and tuned properly. I am happy with mine now, it just took a bit of work.

So it is just a larger version of the AFR 210, ect? It used to be that the AFR227 was a raised port head that flowed very nicely, not to the level of the raised port 18° stuff, but quite good for 23° heads.

Let me throw a bit of fuel on this fire...

I am one of the many who have had problems with the AS&M MB. Plain and simple, the butterflys want to stay open when under WOT and serious load. This is a very bad situation in a boosted car, and there are numerous examples across the internet of this exact same issue.

I actually have two AS&M MBs, and they both do the same. One now has additional spring wraps to allow the throttle to return (I was using an external spring, but this route is cleaner). If you get the MB past center open, they will close, it is just a matter of getting it back from full open (quite scary when I was first doing the tune). Both MBs have been sent back to AS&M with each re-aligned and properly set-up, but even AS&M acknowledges the issue. I also run more IAC than I would with the twin 58MM to aid in idle quality.

As a side note, I ran back to back on the Mustang dyno with the MB, then the billet twin 58MM, and there was less than 0.3% (3 tenths of 1%) difference between the two. This is on a car that was producing right at 825WHP on the Mustang dyno. I chalk that up to meaasurement error.

BTW, your intake / MB combo looks familiar...

Very nice heads! I hope you have an equally decent cam, intake and shortblock to mate with them.

Are these the raised runner heads? And if so, will you be modifying the MRII to match, or having that "farmed out"?

I posted this on another site to serve to explain my absence over the last few weeks on this board.

What do you do when you find out that you are part of the ~3500 people being let go from your company?

Well I figured I needed something to do in between jobs as I will be out at the end of Feb (can not work elsewhere until very late Feb), and I have a bit of vacation to burn at the end of the 2008 year.

So I started by finally erecting the lift (I should have bought / installed one of these years ago). This is sweet (you can see it in the background in the pics on each side of my '87.

Then I decided I would buy a few wrecked bikes ~2 weeks ago. So my son (yes the one who was critically injured on 11/1; fully healed; ah.. to be young) and I made a 1900 mile trip to northern AL, and western TN over 37 hrs on 12/3-12/4 to get these:

2005 GSXR 750, laid down, cosmetic wrecked, needs some TLC

2007 GSXR 750, curbed, wasted rear suspension (swingarm, wheel, links, brake, etc) and lots of cosmetic.

damaged parts removed

lots of new "auction" parts installed.

The '05 was ready for inspection and registration within 3 days of being home and the '07 will be ready this weekend. I am looking for the next one(s) as we speak. I used to rebuild the C4 vettes and have done one C5, but these bikes are just easy to bolt together.

Any other ideas of what to do in between "meaningful" employment?

I run a similar sized SR cam (248/254 & 0.050", 0.670"+) in my 408CID on the street. While not for everyone, I find it to be quite streetable and makes plenty of down low (~2000 RPM) power to pull away from stationary. I do use shaft rockers, which may be helping to keep everything where it is supposed to be. The engine delivered 480+WHP in n/a form with 9.35SCR and AFR215CPs.

I have checked the lash many times, with it only needing adjustment once (actually twice if you consider after break-in, then after ~6 mos), and have had no need for adjustment in the last several years.

Well I started installing the lift last weekend (the weekend before Thanksgiving), and had the rams upright and most of the support members installed, yet not near operational.

Well on Tues (two days before Thanksgiving), evening, I get the call from my wife that someone has rearended my DD hard. I wind up getting the car towed, and spent much of friday moving things around so that I can get a 2nd car in the back area, as well as finishing out the lift. (There must have been a reason that out of the blue I started installing the lift, if I had not set the rams upright, there would be no room for the wrecked Lexus in the back bay.) I have a few more anchors to install, but everything is working very nice. The lift is soo smooth.

I will try to get pics up soon, as I was rather busy over Thanksgiving weekend supervising / installing a new roof on the house including new decking (thanks to Ike). Oh, I also managed to buy another wrecked Gixxer (not bad at all) this weekend, so I will add that project in the garage with the Gix1000 and Kawi 7R.

Having a lift will be sweet for that work that I used to lay on my back to do.

Pic promised soon.

Can I get a price on the left upper bolt that holds the rear license plate. I realize that you probably want to sell the rear bumper whole, but if you decide to part it out, I really need this bolt. Shipping to 77010. :thumbright:

The only thing I would add at this point is that you are so upside down in the cost vs value analysis, that I would not let $1000 get in the way of what you want to do.

These cars are not worth a whole lot, so even the personm just doing heads/cam is investing a whole lot of money that they will likely be unable to recover. Do what is going to maake you happy!

If you drag race, I think the deeper gear will be faster, regardless of what the sim says. The steeper gears make wheel spin infinitely more manageable, and makes the car much easier to launch effectively. If you put a sticky tire under it that can handle a 4-5K clutch drop, the 3.45's might be faster, but even then I have my doubts.

Although I agree that with a 6 speed the deeper gears are more fun around town, I ran into issues with running out of gear in the 1/4 mile. I have a set of 3.54s, a 3.7 and a 4.10 all spare chunks, and I could make none of them work. With the tires I run at the track, if I get much faster, I will have to go to a 3.33D44 (which I really don't want to do).

OK Gents, I have been on here for less than a month and have had a 6-10 PMs. I can see that they exist, but when I try to look at them or reply to them, they no longer exist.

If there is something that someone wants to communicate with me, please send it to my email at

and I will reply.

Thanks,

I would wait until you are tuned to make a decision on the exhaust, as the note and smell will likely change as the tune gets closer.

I agree with the above statement, but starting at 20 psi at 1000RPM, which leads to 70 psi at 6000 RPM. 10W30 or straight 30W in my cars (but typically use Castrol brand).

I run a very nice all metal filter that has a billet shell and flange and allows you to inspect what is actually being captured. It lets you know in advance when something is going away.

The rattle sounds like you may not have gotten the auto trans convertor dust cover re-installed properly. You should check that first, and also the bracket on the back-end of the starter.

With regard to slow acceleration, I would focus on the changes you made to the fuel system.

Check what you changed first.

You can get one and an extra if you like.

But, if you are anywhere near 600HP, it will be sooner rather than later.

I have broken more than my share of D44 cases (nasty when it happens). I have only broken one D36 (cause I knew I needed to change to the D44). My car was running in the 12s when I broke the D36 and broke several D44s in the 11s. I went to the cradle to tie the two sides and the ladder together (basically cradle the pinion area) and have yet to break another case. The car has dipped into the low 9s on slicks, and is still on the same D44 case (although the soft 60' time of 1.7x may be a contributing factor to the long life).

I have probably a half dozen D44s that I keep around because the big names contact me when they need a complete conversion. These conversions for DRM, and TPIS go for between $1700 and $2100 depending upon the gearing. The complete conversion includes the driveshaft, batwing, chunk and ladder.

You should keep in mind that the earlier case tend to be beefier in the web area, but also only come with 3.08 gears (requires gear change for a ZF application), while the later have less beef, but come in 3.33, 3.45, and 3.54 ratio.

The tune will have to be "spot on" to be able to survive 10.5:1 SCR and a blower. It can be done, but it is not forgiving...

And a blower is just not a bolt it on proposition. It involves a thoroughly thought out combination to extract big power. Nothing (and I mean not one support component) remains untouched when you have a larger cube engine and a blower.

With your combo, you should definitely see 600HP with a blower, which you will find to be quite unmanageable on the street.

Low 9:1 SCR works well in blower applications. You should remember that the lower the SCR, the "lazier" it will feel when not under boost. Most people who add blowers to street cars have no "real" boost until above 3500-4000 RPM. 8:1 with a street blower set-up would make for a real "dog" on the street.

I run 9.4:1, but have 8 lbs boost coming in under 3000RPM and 15 psi in by 4000RPM.

Probably more like 5-7HP on a stock cam vette. And you can run the factory springs, though your springs may be tired depending upon mileage.

I had previously mentioned that I had a few tucked away in the attic so that you can give it a try and see if the LCD panel is really your issue.

The U-CoatIt system is similar to the polymer supplied by HD. Resistant to all solvents including ethers and ethers bottoms (brake fluid), but has problems with hot, sticky tires.

What's wrong with the IC? Are you sure it has failed? Do you want to try another to see if that is indeed the case. I have a few good ones in the parts attic.

I also have the targa tops, unfortunately none to match your car, but I bet I could have found one in less than an hour.

What area of Houston are you?

Did you do your own calcs, or hire a structural engineer to size the beams?

I want to run a 40-ft beam across the middle and have a peaked ceiling with roof joists and no trusses in the way. I'm thinking a fatty truss on each end will carry the whole thing.

CC,
I am a degreed ChE, but was 6 hrs shy of having my ME degree when I switched to ChE. I did the calcs on the loads and beams required, and most any of these load calcs can be found on-line. With that being said, if you are required to be permitted or are unsure of your calcs, then it is best to get a PE involved.

BTW, I would need a bit more detail on your specific build (i.e. height, roof slope, loads, etc) to be able to provide an estimate as to whether you are going down the right path.

Aaron, Are you going to paint the floor?

I used the HD Polymer floor coat system on the original garage. While this product is great for resisting fluids (oil, gas, solvents, etc), hot tires will pull it right up. Basically, the rubber compound bonds to the polymer coating and then departs with the tires. I have DRs on my vette, and there are multiple spots where there are nice tread shaped blocks "missing" from the floor.

I have a new coating that I am considering that is made from methyl methacrylate (MMA) to yield what is called liquid plexiglass (also made from iC4= which is a product my company sells). This coating is used on new dealership floors, but is considerably more expensive. I had this coating installed on my slide to the pool, and even without water a et swimsuit slides just fine (though I do have water to the slide, and it is FAST). I'm not sure when I will get to this, as it is a pretty significant investment.
