I was watching a show and they changed the o2 sensors on a truck just because of the milege on it. Would this help on a vette for performance and fuel economy? Should these o2 sensors be changed?

They are cheap. But typically unless you get a code, it will make no difference on performance.

An o2 sensor has to stray pretty far before it throws a code, and it will effect performance before that.

Supposedly they can be tested. If you're on your original, I would recommend changing it.

What is your mpg on the freeway?

I've never really looked in to it much, but your post made me wonder so I've been looking stuff up on the internet. Found a replacement schedule on a few automotive sites:
Quote:
OXYGEN SENSOR REPLACEMENT

Any O2 sensor that is defective obviously needs to be replaced. But there may also be benefits to replacing the O2 sensor periodically for preventative maintenance. Replacing an aging O2 sensor that has become sluggish can restore peak fuel efficiency, minimize exhaust emissions and prolong the life of the converter.

Unheated 1 or 2 wire wire O2 sensors on 1976 through early 1990s vehicles can be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Heated 3 and 4-wire O2 sensors on mid-1980s through mid-1990s applications can be changed every 60,000 miles. On OBD II equipped vehicles (1996 & up), a replacement interval of 100,000 miles can be recommended.

Guess it's time to replace mine since I'm sure it's the original one. Can't hurt for what, $25?

Matthew

PS - I read you have to coat the threads with conductive anti-seize before installing the new one.

Thought I'd update. I picked up a new O2 sensor at autozone yesterday since I was out. Paid $23 with tax and everything. Found them on ebay for about $21 shipped so I don't feel bad about that. Came with the anti-seize on the threads already.

Matthew

FYI - Bosch #12014, oem replacement. I didn't feel like splicing the wire, this one came with the plastic adapter already on it.

Does the 85 vette have one or two O2 sensors?
Anybody know the part number?

Delco AFS21 requires only 1.

Yup.

If your tune is good, you don't even NEED an O2 nope.

BUT, if you've been runnin' with a bad burn, and some heavy carbon fouling is left on the sensor heads, it might need a toothbrush goin' through the grooves to clean it.

Even then, you gotta' make sure the burn is right first...
