Well, the factory valve covers looked like crap, so I picked up an inexpensive chrome set to replace the factory ones (I am holding onto the factory ones so I can refinish and be able to reinstall if I want). I was also leaking oil from the valve covers, so I was going to replace the gaskets anyway. When I pulled the covers off, to my surprise and delight, were Comp Cam 1.6 Roller Rockers! Now I know why the car runs a little better in the quarter on what I thought was a factory motor. I wonder what else the previous owner did to the motor. My 86 does have a Dana 44 with 3.73 gears, that was installed two owners ago.
This also came as great news to my wife, who has decided to give drag racing a try and wants to use the 86 Vette. That is what got me started on all of this, as I wanted to do a full tune-up on the Vette. Now, she is not sure if she wants to sell the 86 Vette, if she likes drag racing. Our local drag strip has a Corvette Challenge, that she would like to compete in with me. My 08 Vette might be faster, but watch, she will end up schooling me on the tree, if we get paired up together. I guess I really need to get my 86 Monte Carlo SS transmission issue sorted out, so I can have one of my family drive it to the track as a back up to when my wife bumps me out of the Corvette Challenge, I can drive in the GM Challenge.

I wonder if it has a different cam? Just for grins, I'd measure the cam lift and see if he installed an aftermarket cam in it too.

What would a factory early L98 run in the quarter? I am hovering at 14.0 right now. I know the 3.73 gears help quite a bit. I'd love to figure out if it has a different cam, but I don't know how to measure the cam lift.

The crate motor is rated at 350hp (at flywheel). The shop that did the work figures with the long tubes, dual exhaust and the other go-fast parts installed that the motor is making close to 400hp (again, at flywheel). Add the 100 shot of spray and I am hoping to have the car in the low 13's, once I get the transmission issue sorted out. Right now, the SS is shifting way to early in 1st and 2nd (shifts at 3400rpm). Once the shop gets that cleared up, then we'll see what it will do.

Should run around 14.4-14.5 stock. I doubt there's a cam in there. Most likely it's the roller rockers and the gears that dropped your time.

LOL!!! Yeah, I know it has a cam in there, so if Notorious bet Matatk, Notorious won. Now...I think it is a stock cam, but none the less there is some sort of cam in the car.
