Brian,

Yup, I joined their action group a few weeks ago. They have an office near me here in Alexandria, VA

I have been in contact and hope to use our events and relationship with Sport Chevrolet to try to help change the overall attitude.

Seems like a tough job since event the guys here on this forum seem to be GM downers.

Sad state of affairs.

I hope it turns around

At Long Beach a couple weeks back, Ron Fellows was asked about the future of Corvette Racing.

As Ron put it, even before the crisis, GM needed the racing program to have a good return on investment. As it stands, Corvette Racing has an EXCELLENT return on investment. Hense the desire to go to GT2, versus just leave. And judging from the attendance/participation at the various corrals, I would buy that.

Sebring was simply massive - I am guessing 300 Vettes on race day (a picture of most of them could appear in a future issue of Corvette Enthusiast... donno for sure) and another 100 or so at Long Beach. Those are damned good numbers.

The Black Hills Classic in July looks to have the traditional excellent turn out. Perhaps this is an event that GM Marketing should focus on as an opportunity to generate some much needed positive press.

Subject: GM Information

Hello --

Thank you again for your interest in receiving periodic updates and headlines about GM's progress and some of the latest news around its restructuring. Immediately below, I included a recap of GM's viability plan for your background. Below that are a few news clips that came out this week and farther below I included notable quotes.

I'm sending you all of this information to give you a well-rounded sample of various topics, knowing that some of it you will find useful and some not. I'm assuming the more the better so you can choose.

Have a fantastic weekend,
Amanda

Plan for Success and Global Competitiveness
“The actions we’re announcing… position us for sustainable success by establishing stronger brands, fewer nameplates, and a world-class dealer network. They will also allow us to significantly increase our North American structural-cost reduction and dramatically reduce our U.S. breakeven volume, enabling the company to be profitable at today’s very low industry-sales volumes.” – GM CEO Fritz Henderson, GM FastLane Blog, 4/27/09, http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/

o GM’s viability plan calls for considerable sacrifice from all stakeholders – bondholders, shareholders, dealers, suppliers, employees, and retirees.
o GM anticipates reducing its U.S. dealer count by 42% by 2010 to 3,605 dealers.
o GM has reduced its U.S. workforce from 191,000 in 2000 to 97,000 in 2008. And since 2005, GM has reduced structural costs in North America by $9 billion.
o GM intends to fully repay loans back to the taxpayers. In less than two years, GM predicts it will become fully profitable.
o GM is working closely with the federal government and meeting stringent milestones to demonstrate that restructuring and long-term planning are moving forward and on pace.
o The auto industry has tremendous potential for growth worldwide given that only 12% of the world’s population drives vehicles today. – Brian Olson, CFO for Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Nordic Green ’08 Conference, 4/29/08, www.siliconvalley.um.dk/en/ser ... rWindsNewDancePartner.htm

NEWS QUOTES

James R. Healey, USA Today, 5/1/09, “Drivers Could Get a Charge Out of Chevrolet Volt”
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/r ... let-volt-early-look_N.htm
…[F]olks who buy or lease the Chevrolet Volt electric car — scheduled to go on sale in November 2010 — should be surprised and pleased. If the so-called Volt mules that General Motors provided for a few miles of driving around the GM Tech Center campus here Tuesday were representative, Volt owners will be treated to remarkably punchy performance from the electric drivetrain and a level of quiet refinement that appears to lead the industry.

William Holstein, Author of “Why GM Matters: Inside the Race to Transform an American Icon,” FOX News, 5/3/09
General Motors is in an entirely different condition than Chrysler, [as GM is] a viable automaker. They have a complete portfolio of new products, not just gas-guzzling SUVs as you read in the New York Times all the time. And they have a viable management team and they've got a plan in place, so in that case, the government ought to let them execute on their plan and continue to lend, until they get through this economic crisis, but stay out of the way.

Lyle J. Dennis, Founder of GM-Volt.com, Washington Post, 5/7/09, “The Real Value of the Volt”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ ... 5/06/AR2009050603759.html
While the wealthy and the government may have to subsidize first-generation Volts, electric car prices will drop substantially with increasing production volume as economies of scale come into play. In my opinion and that of thousands of others, the Volt is the best idea GM has ever had.

Phillip Reed, Edmunds.com, USA Today, 5/1/09, “What Does Chrysler’s Filing Mean for GM, Suppliers?”
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2 ... chrysler-bankruptcy_N.htm
No one can blame car buyers who shied away from brands that were mentioned in the same breath as the word “bankruptcy.” Now that their warranties are being guaranteed…GM vehicles are good deals which are worth considering.

Tom Stephens, GM VP for Global Product Development, GM FastLane Blog, 5/5/09, “Plug-in hybrid technology will be applied to one of GM’s four core brands”

http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/archives/ ... 99s_four_core_brands.html

We’re making a lot of difficult yet necessary decisions these days to ensure GM’s long-term future[.] … I can assure you our commitment to hybrid, plug-in hybrid and advanced battery technology is a key element of GM’s reinvention. …I’m pleased to let you know the plug-in hybrid technology will be applied to one of GM’s four core brands. …Even better news, the introduction of this technology will not be delayed. We are still planning initial delivery, of the plug-in hybrid vehicles, which use a modified version of the GM Two-mode Hybrid system, in 2011 to the DOE and EPRI for use in fleets. The Volt and plug-in hybrid vehicle are two of 14 hybrid and electric vehicles GM plans to offer by 2012.

Good afternoon --

The big auto news out today was the Obama Administration's announcement of new mileage and pollution standards. Included below is a Wall Street Journal blog write-up on GM CEO Fritz Henderson's interview with CNBC this a.m. and also some news clips on the announcement.

In light of today's news, I thought you may like to know what GM has been doing already. As part of its efforts to reinvent the automobile, the company has put an emphasis on further improving safety, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing America‘s dependency on foreign oil, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

o GM offers 20 models that obtain 30 mpg or more in highway driving, more than any other automaker.
o By mid-2009, GM will have 9 hybrid vehicles in the market…more than any other automaker
o About 65 percent of GM vehicles sold in the U.S. will be capable of running on alternative fuels in 2014 – up from 17% in 2008

Have a great week,
Amanda

GM CEO Says Fuel-Economy Goals Can Be Met
May 19, 2009, 8:09 AM ET
By WSJ Staff
General Motors can meet the U.S. government’s newly accelerated timetable for improving vehicles’ fuel efficiency, Chief Executive Fritz Henderson said Tuesday.

GM, he told CNBC in an interview, is “supportive of” new rules introduced Monday by President Barack Obama’s administration to raise cars’ mileage to an average of 39 miles per gallon and trucks’ mileage to 30 mpg by 2016 - four years earlier than current federal law requires.

As he and other GM executives have said many times regarding the auto maker’s restructuring prospects, Henderson repeated that staying out of court is preferable but said that the company is prepared to reorganize under Chapter 11 if necessary.

He acknowledged the “tough threshold” of having to reach by June 1 an accord with investors to exchange at least 90% of the company’s debt as demanded by the U.S. Treasury Department for GM to avoid bankruptcy

He acknowledged that reaching an accord with investors to exchange 90% of the company’s debt by June 1, as demanded by the U.S. Treasury Department to avoid bankruptcy, was a “tough threshold.” Asked about the likelihood he’d continue at GM’s helm after a restructuring,
Henderson said, “I don’t worry too much about my own job.” He was promoted in early April from chief operating officer at the urging of the Obama administration’s auto task force.

Details on New Regulation Standards
“By 2016…new passenger cars sold in the U.S. will have to meet an average mileage requirement of 39 mpg, up from 27.5 mpg currently. Light trucks would have to deliver an average of 30 mpg, compared with about 23 mpg today….The move…would accelerate the largest government-mandated transformation of vehicles on the American road since the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the first federal fuel-economy standards took effect[.]” – The Wall Street Journal, 5/19/09, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12426 ... ml#mod=todays_us_page_one

“The Transportation Department's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would set the new fuel-economy standards, which would raise the average fuel efficiency of a new car by 30 percent.” – The Los Angeles Times, 5/19/09, http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwor ... -na-emissions19-2009may19,0,1578831,print.story

“The new regulations will mark the first time that the government will set rules on automobile emissions and combine them with fuel-economy standards.” – Slate.com, 5/19/09, http://www.slate.com/id/2218647/

GM & CAFE

“General Motors commends President Obama's leadership to establish a harmonized National Program to improve vehicle fuel economy and lower greenhouse gas emissions.” – GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson, 5/18/09, http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewaySe ... l.do?domain=2&docid=54400

“GM and the auto industry benefit by having more consistency and certainty to guide our product plans.” – GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson, 5/18/09, http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewaySe ... l.do?domain=2&docid=54400

“Although meeting these standards will be costly, those companies with electric car programs could be at a significant advantage. After all the Chevy Volt is likely to get an official EPA efficiency rating significantly greater than 100 mpg, although the exact rating methods and how they may affect the CAFE are still being worked out.” – Lyle Dennis, 5/18/09, http://gm-volt.com/category/efficiency/

“Assuming the reductions come to pass, a trip to a dealership in 2016 might prove remarkably different than one today. Rows of SUVs and full-sized luxury cars could be replaced by highly efficient compact sedans powered by hybrid drive trains, small SUVs running on clean diesel motors and possibly electric cars that emit no greenhouse gases.” – The Los Angeles Times, 5/19/09, http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwor ... -na-emissions19-2009may19,0,1578831,print.story

Their optimism is humorous.

I think someone taking a trip to a GM dealership in 2016 would see dusty office furniture and boxes of auto parts with an auctioneer chattering in the background.

Hello and happy Friday --

As you likely know, the deadline imposed by the White House for GM to restructure is Monday, June 1, so I'll keep in touch with any GM issued news early next week.

Far below are news and quotes from this week, but also I included immediately below a press release just issued today by GM, followed by a Wall Street Journal story on it.

Have a great weekend,
Amanda

FOR RELEASE: 2009-05-29

GM Announces Plans to Build Small Car in U.S.
* GM to utilize and retool idled assembly and stamping facility for future production.
* Additional production will help the company deliver outstanding new vehicles to the compact and small car markets and meet future fuel efficiency regulations.

DETROIT, Mich. -- General Motors Corporation (NYSE:GM) announced today it plans to build a future small car in the United States utilizing an idled UAW-GM facility. This vehicle adds to GM's growing portfolio of U.S.-built, highly fuel efficient cars including the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt.

"Small cars represent one of the fastest growing segments in both the U.S. and around the world," said Fritz Henderson, General Motors President and CEO. "We believe this car will be a winner with our current and future customers in the U.S."

The re-tooled plant will be capable of building 160,000 cars annually, which can be a combination of both small and compact vehicles. Selection of the site will be determined in the future.

"I would like to personally thank the UAW for agreeing to work with us to ensure our overall manufacturing competitiveness in the United States," said Henderson. "This vehicle segment, while important today and expected to be more so in the future, is extremely challenging. It takes a special effort by everyone to bring a domestically produced small car to market in a cost-competitive and profitable way - but that is what we are going to do together."

GM already has a strong manufacturing presence in the United States. Currently, about 67 percent of GM cars and trucks sold in the U.S. are built in the U.S. With this announcement, GM anticipates that U.S. production levels will increase beyond 70 percent by 2013, augmenting its already automotive industry-leading U.S. manufacturing footprint.

GM Plans to Build Small Car at an Idled US Plant
Wall Street Journal, by Sharon Terlep, 5/29/09
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090529-708666.html
"General Motors Corp. (GM), days from an expected bankruptcy filing, will spend $600 million to $700 million to produce what would be the only U.S.-built subcompact car, people familiar with the plan said Friday."

GM News Quotes:
Barack Obama, U.S. President, 5/22/09, C-SPAN
Ultimately, I think that GM is going to be a strong company. And we're going to be pulling out as soon as the economy recovers and they've completed their restructuring[.] We will see both GM…emerg[ing] from this restructuring process, leaner, meaner, more competitive with a set of product lines that appeal to consumers: good cars that are fuel efficient and that look at the markets of tomorrow.

Ronald Hwang, Natural Resources Defense Council, 5/19/09, CNBC’s “Kudlow Report”
I believe they can compete. If you're looking at the products that General Motors is starting to deliver, what Ford are starting to deliver to the marketplace, you are seeing a dramatically different industry and that is -- that's driven by market, competitive issues, it is also driven by the expectations of new standards. The American workers and the American autoworkers and American companies and American engineers they can compete with any auto company in the world.

Mark Phelan, Detroit Free Press, 5/28/09, “Lutz Optimistic About ‘Smaller, Leaner’ G.M.”
http://www.freep.com/article/20090528/BUSINESS01/905290329
The new GM will be smaller, leaner, very profitable and with an outstanding product line, [G.M. Vice Chairman Bob] Lutz
told the Automotive Press Association in Detroit on Thursday. Lutz heaped praise on the presidential automotive task
force, calling this ‘the first time in history the auto industry has had the ear’ of the president. …Lutz said GM's recovery
plan rests on leadership in advanced technologies and fuel economy, a newly competitive cost structure and debt load,
and ‘undisputed product excellence.’

Phil LeBeau, CNBC Auto Industry Reporter, 5/28/09, NBC’s “NBC Nightly News”
This certainly should clear the path for General Motors to have a quicker, smoother bankruptcy, and the reason that's important is because the less time General Motors spends in bankruptcy, the less questions or the fewer questions that are raised with consumers as they drive by dealerships. [Consumers] will have more confidence if GM gets out of bankruptcy sooner, and that's what they're hoping at the Treasury Department, a bankruptcy as quick as what we're seeing with Chrysler.
