My 93 LT1 Vette is running real rough. Idles rough steady miss under acceleration and sometimes stalls. The tac is also bouncing around a lot it use to hold fairly steady but now can jump several thousand RPM. All of this is exactly how it ran when the optispark went out except that time I got a code that pointed me in the right direction this time nothing. Last time it did run even worse I almost could not get it to start at all several times. Maybe I am just not to a catastrophic failure yet? I did have a leaking radiator hose right over the top of it so for that reason alone I think its a likely suspect I just don't want to spend $500 for something I may not need. If I do need one I plan to go with the vented MSD this time and hopefully it will last a little longer. Where is the best place to get one? Summet is almost 2 months to ship and seems a bit high in price.

couldn't get out it at all

It would stumble horribly when I tried to accelerate.

I was definitely the cap & rotor since I've replaced nothing else since, that was 30k miles ago.

That one is just cap and rotor this is the full optispark from there.

Better availability but still $500 I guess I will look around and see if I can get a better price otherwise it looks like a good place to order from.

What year is your car, the later one's are vented

If could be the wires too.

Fire up your car at night with the hood open

You'll see it arching

Really wild to see!

If it only does it when its damp I would suspect something else, wires seems like a good place to start.

Travis,

Its been a long time ago, but I remember when my car had around 110k miles on it and the original plug wires and plugs, the car was missing and acting similar to how you describe. I replaced the wires and plugs and bad manners all disappeared. Its worth a first step unless you have new stuff already installed.

Also, I have a 1994 which used the old unventilated Optispark, but the new MSD units all are vented. I installed the MSD unit when I rebuilt the motor and it has been good so far. I think I have around 3 to 4k miles on the new rebuild.

Just out of curiosity, I checked the Rock Auto site and saw they have a new ACDelco for a 93 listed for $442. They also have a re-manufactured one without the module listed for $177. I had no idea rebuilt Optis were available (not that you'd want one)....

Opti's can run f'd up for months before they throw a code. Or they can throw one right away. Ya never know. My 92 ran for 4 months cutting out above 4k and no where else. Finally threw a code. The bearing was so bad thet the balls fell out n the workbench.

The radiator hose leak is suspect. I'd do a fuel press check and have the ICM checked before getting the MSD.
And I wouldn't get anything but an MSD.

You may want to do a search here, runs in my mind that someone got one for $420 not too long ago but, I may be wrong.

I went ahead and ordered the MSD from the other place, only $50 more for a nice vented one. I don't think I would mess with a rebuilt one, I wander what they mean by without the module?

I think the fuel pressure is probably good, before it got real bad it ran best at wide open. How do you do a ICM check?

The cap/rotor has its own set of problems.

Remember this, codes are only generated by electrical related problems.

When the cap/rotor fail, it's because of carbon tracing. It causes a misfire, which causes the computer to adjust timing. The computer fixes the misfire, the timing readvances. This is what causes the wondering idle.

Also, the same carbon tracing causes the high-RPM miss.

That sounds like a likely possibility I will have to take this one apart when I get it off and see just what is anything is wrong with it.

Some parts stores can check the ICM and there's a chart in the FSM. They usually have problems when hot.

Since you have the opti coming anyway, you may not want to mess with it. There is a heatblocking grease on the back of the ICM that deteriorates after time.

Couple things on the MSD, the clearence between the MSD & waterpump can be tight, I'd install the MSD and dryfit the w/p , just 2 bolts, no gaskets just to check. I had to file my waterpump where it touched the opti, only about 1/32, no big deal.
And, I'd put the vent hose on the bottom of the MSD before you install it, just a pain to get plyers on the clamp if the unit's already installed.
I put the tee for the vacuum source in the line on the pass side of the motor, under the injector cover.

I'd also doublecheck the screws inside that hold the rotor on. I put a very small dab of hi temp silicon on threads and reinstalled. I did this because Jon (SpectatorRacing) had some screws back out, but he was running at hi rpm most of the time. It was easier to do on the bench than it would be to do later.

BTW, 10k on my MSD now, I wouldn't use anything ese.

Thank you Bill sounds like great advice. I was not going to try and fix this one and put it back in I just wanted to know what part if any went bad. I am hopping now that it is the opti. Would suck a ton if I spent all this money and did all this work and it was something else.

Either way you'll have an opti that's actually sealed and vented = peace of mind.

I can't see the picture, but I wish I had seen this post sooner.

I would have offered a few suggestions, none of which involved buying a new optispark, especially not an MSD.

What is the issue shown in the picture?

The tach bouncing around almost always means a hi or lo voltage condition...is your alternator bad?

The picture is of spark plug wires with the insulation gone ware they were touching the headers. The tach bouncing around started before this. I just took it out for a test drive with a new opti and new wires its running good now. I did not notice if the tach was acting up just went for a quick drive.
