OK, since the '84 sat up for 6 weeks or so, it has now developed a very low rpm stumble.

I'll admit things that have been neglected.....
1. Air Cleaner.....filthy
2. Distributor cap (does it have a Rotor inside?? If so add that to the list)
3. TPI adjustment
4. injector cleaning
5. Timing Chain...not sure when I should have changed that.
6. Ignition coil or whatever it is called.

And before anything else.....The battery has been trying to die...I may have to get a new one as I have no idea how old this one is and since the cars been going again I've had to nurse the battery by charging it etc. The voltage gauge has been reading only 13.3-13.7 and sometimes 14.0....but never 14.4.....could a weakly charged system be the culprit here?


I hate the stumble, I love to ease out on the clutch and have a good running motor and allow it to climb out.....but this is sucking wind....

What would you guys suggest??

Is the gas old?

Maybe not exactly related, but my lawn mower would barely stay running this spring - it started having problems last fall. After diddling around with a bunch of stuff, I finally bought a new air filter for it, and it starts and runs like a champ now.

Sounds like you need to do some of the regular maintanance stuff there. Once that's done, if the problem's still there it can be better assessed.

If this condition has happened just from sitting, it would seem to be related to either the gas or the battery going bad. Or something that has become stuck from sitting (not sure if the '84 has anything like an IAC valve, etc.).

Well, it was almost empty when I parked it...it had about a gallon in it. My first run around the block ran out all the gas. So I had to go back home and get my wallet to put more gas in it to go on the freeway.

When the battery is weak enough not to get a crank on the starter.....The mileage averages and all that gets reset to zero...could the CPU get reset and then take time to learn again?

How about vacuum leaks? Get a spray can of starting fluid and spray on all vacuum hoses and connections while it is idling - if the idle smooths out, you've found a leak.

Idle is smooth. no bouncing and sits at about 800.

It's just when you let out the clutch....under a load it stumbles just a tad and then goes

That still could be vacuum-related. I had a car many years ago that had a problem idling under load (in Drive), while it idled smoothly in Park, and it turned out to be a little vacuum leak. In that case, I think you'd hear the idle change a bit with the starting fluid.

I'm not a wrench and I go off of things I've read or dealt with personally. I believe when you run the gas out your filters pick up all the crap from the bottom of the tank. My 90 6 spd has a stumble and poor idle and is being worked out right now. Did you ohm the injectors? I had 6 injectors reading 10 ohms. (bad) Check out the FIC videos to view how to ohm the injectors.

I think it had to be the CPU or the charging system....

I had the battery tested it is sorta weak....but it is starting the car every time now and.........

The stumble is gone....

These cars are like an old woman, if you ignore them for a while they will revolt and leave you walking. If you are going to let it sit put some gas treatment in the tank and get a small trickle charger to hook to the battery. Never leave it with a small amount of gas in the tank as small amount will go bad faster than at least half a tank. Leaving a car sitting is the worst thing you can do, drive it some to keep everything lubed and operating. Treat her good and ride in her once in a while and all will be good with the world.

^^That is a good idea. Just understand, letting it sit was not by choice.

I had everything from the Flywheel to the rear hubs lying around on the garage floor. the tranny, D36, u-joints were all getting serviced.

I'd work some days and sit and stare other days.
