well.. i helped a guy out changing his intake gaskets on his 89 vette. apparently it ran fine before hand. i am no beginner at working on cars. i tore the tpi down replaced all the gaskets and put it back together using all new gaskets. go to tighten the thermostat housing and it snaps. so 2 weeks goes by and our schedules open up so that i can finish the job. replace the housing fill with antifreeze and start it up.. runs like complete shit. its smoking like crazy. i set the timing and its still bellowing smoke out the tailpipes. according to the owner this is not how it runs. lol. so i go over all the bolts i can reach and they were all tight. i have no idea what is wrong with this thing. there is nothing out of place. its not leaking coolant or oil. i am lost. i let it run for about 20 minutes and the smoke never let up. so i pulled it back into his garage and get a check engine light. pull the codes. its says 36 and 42. i am thinking there is no way in hell these codes have anything to do with the problem. any suggestions????

Wrong AFR because of code 36 and 42.. By the time you fix it the 02 might be toast. You spray the intake down with carb cleaner to check for vac leaks? -- Joe |

are you sure the base gaskets didn't slip on install?

36 is MAF burn off
42 is the EST You do need to troubleshoot both of those. Did you reset the ECM after setting the timing after pulling the ESC wire? |

With all due respect Josh...what color is the smoke, white?...maybe when you torqued and snapped the thermostat housing, a hairline crack in the block opened up front. That would get coolant into the valley and drain right into the pan right?. I know that is completely "out there" but is there coolant in the oil? Or, maybe theres a crack in one of edges of the head gaskets that was sealed by the old intake gasket, but not the new one just because the old one has never been disturbed. it just seems strange that it just started after the gaskets were manipulated......wonder if there's coolant in the valley under the intake.....just some guesses from the rookie!
Good luck, alan |

its running rich but the smoke is a whitish gray.. i have sprayed it down with brake cleaner cause it was all i had with no noticeable changes. there is no coolant in the oil. all gaskets look to be in place. i had the timing almost perfect upon reinstallation and it fired right up and was smoking from that moment on. and when i say this thing is smoking i mean it is creating a cloud around us. firing order is correct and was triple checked yesterday and the other day when putting it back together. i have never in my life seen a car smoke like this from a vacuum leak.

Take the brake cleaner and spray around the base. I am still thinking something went amiss with the install. A bit of debris near the coolant port.
Just curious... it makes the most sense, really. |

one truck i installed intake gaskets and had not tighten a bolt enough and the motor instantly filled with coolant and the oil mixed within seconds. i learned from that mistake and go over every bolt at least twice. in this case the coolant isn't going into the oil. i would have a hard time believing the base gasket is leaking but at this point i don't have an option but to take it all back apart.. i am going to swap out the torx bolts.

sucks, but your right... you have to remove the base to make sure all is well.
I agree, a screwed up intake will normally fill the crankcase... never know, tho... |

One time a guy hooked a tiny radiator coolant line or something of that nature to a vacuum port since the tiny line looked like a vacuum line. I guess it was spewing antifreeze into the intake tract and smoked (or steamed, rather) badly. I read about it on a forum one time. Might want to check to make sure that didn't happen.

Yeah, like when a faulty vacuum modulator starts sending trans. fluid thru the intake, smokescreen time.
