I'm upgrading my garage computer to something a bit more compact, faster, and more storage.

I am also replacing the CRT monitor with a 17" flat panel LCD monitor.

Is the monitor going to be affected...badly...during the winter months when it gets COLD? My garage is not heated and in the winter it's not much more than a few degrees warmer than outside temp minus the wind chill factor.

I won't mind bringing the monitor in for the winter since obviously I am not out there much when it's cold, but I wanted to know if the really cold temps will hurt the monitor even when it's not powered on.

Thanks.

Your garage is attached, right?

With that said, I doubt it ever reaches freezing out there, and that should'nt harm the monitor.

You may want to insulate the garage and door. It really makes a difference.

It's attached by one wall. The roof has insulation, and the adobe brick walls are thick and have insulation filling them. The door is new, insulated, and well sealed.

It gets VERY cold since there is no heating vent or source for heat. Our winters will show us temps below 0 in the dead of winter, so yeah, it'll get below freezing out there.

How cold does it get inside the trailer that these are shipped in when the trucker's driving down the pike and it's 0 degrees? Maybe the packaging helps though.

Trust me, DB's garage is like a deep freeze in the winter. It usually is warmer outside with the blowing snow then in his garage.........

Some will identify operating temps in the specs.

The monitor should have this info in it's instructions (or on the manufacturer's web site).

What would worry me is the moisture condensation/collection on a Humid/rainy/snowy day. Turn the unit on, and possibly cook something.

The only thing close to this happening I've ever witnessed is the receiver I've had in my garage for the past 26 years.
It finally quit working a month ago. Turned it on, it has power, emits static out of the speakers, receives AM/FM stations according to the signal strength meter, but outputs nothing other than static.
Could be just old age (it's a Technics brand by Pasnasonic) too.

I have a 21" LCD in my shop basically a monitor with a tuner. It works fine until I open the garage door and the outside temp drops the shop temp equal to outside temp. LCD screen is not happy with anything below 20 degrees. Shop is heated and maintains a constant 55 degrees. Specs on the box gives a temp range 140 to 25. My screen works fine even though its been exposed to -10 temps.when pulling and car in the shop or loading up stuff in the winter.I use a lap top I picked up cheap at a no name computer store for 140 bucks. I keep engine specs, maintenance data and a running inventory of automotive, construction tools, client lists and stain color formulas for cabinets that I have custom built over the years. Its a 2003-4 Gateway that was traded in for something new. Good enough for what I'm doing in the shop. Something to think about in the future.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think it'll survive and if I know of any super cold stretches this next winter I can always bring it inside.

I have a couple projects to do this summer that will introduce some heat into the garage, and if I can get it to stay in the 40 - 50 degree range I'll be happy and be able to work out there all winter long.

If you insulated the rest of it, it would help you out a lot.

What rest of it? I mentioned that the door is insulated, the roof is insulated, and the adobe brick walls have insulation in them. I suppose I could rip up the concrete floor and re pour using that concrete / foam mix? LOL? Maybe build on top of, behind, and beside, extra rooms that all have heat?

It doesn't matter how well the garage is insulated. Period. If there is no heat source to warm it, the insulation is doing nothing. All the insulation in the world won't make it warmer.

Some guys in my club with more money than I, have heated floors in their garage with natural gas heaters in the ceiling and cold Air AC units for the summer!!

I bought a powerful fan for summer and I use a Kerosene heater for winter. It works pretty good.
