While doing the brakes on my '91 Caprice, I found these cracks on the inside of the sidewall.
The tire date code is '04, they have been properly maintained, and have 30k miles with lots of tread left.
Time for new tires.

Tires don't seem to last long nowadays. If treadwear is not the problem then weather cracking is. I know that a 10 y/o tire now is considered ancient and dangerous. I don't think it is necessarily foolish to buy a good cheap tire and run them till they fail. Then repeat.

Goodyear used to have a major problem with cracking like that on their truck tires, but that is the first time I have seen it on a passenger car tire. What brand are they?

Wow that looks bad! There is really no excuse to get hi-mile tires unless you drive enough to wear them out in 5 years. They have shitty grip and never wear out, so you're more prone to drive on dangerous tires. Those cracks are probably just in the outer casing, but you don't really know.

If you drive a car 8K per year, a 40K mile tire is the best option. If you drive one less than that, get a sticker tire. If you only drive it 1K per year, do lots of burnouts.

Looks like Kelly Springfield to me, which is part of Goodyear.

That damage is related to bead deformation, not age or ozone. It looks similar, but the location must be considered, and in this case, it speaks to bead deformation, possibly as a result of dry mounting and tearing or cutting of the bead sole. Most tires have a 4 or 5 year warranty and something like this is typically covered, FYI.

In the meantime I would buy new ones... those are downright dangerous.

Its one of those things... If you never took them off you would probably get another 20K out of them with no problems... but now that you know they are cracked... you'd be luck to make it up the road.....

Good luck,

Dan

My auto repair shop is putting on 225/75/15 "Primewell's", a Firestone offshoot, for $390 installed.
Dealing with Just Tires about 5 year old tires will only give me indigestion.

Those look like crap.

I have to admit, my mom had KS on her car, and they did not last. Absolute junk.
