I spent the weekend going through my daughters 07 Vette. She can detail it, but I needed to know the mechanicals were in good shape. Pulled wheels checked suspension, and brakes, many hours later it looks great.
Gurus should I change brands of oil with 158K? According to the previous owner since the engine had 1K he has used Amsoil in it and changed it every 15K. Oil has 10K on it since he changed it last and it looks new. He has always used Wix filters. He has all the data and repairs. I usually use Mobil 1. I know that before she puts on very many miles on it she will want to change her own oil. She returns tomorrow from her business trip.
This thing has a HUD. Damn this thing is a beast! Holy crap
forget going Green!

I think you are OK with changing brands but not types; i.e. don't go to/from synthetic to non-synthetic. Other than that I don't see a problem. Stick with the WIX filters though they're good.

I'm glad that deal turned out for her! Nice car too!

I ran Amsoil in my Vette for years when I lived in South Carolina. A friend was a dealer and had it in stock all the time. When I moved here it was a PITA to order it or find it locally, so I went back to Mobile 1. I really don't think there was any issues as a result of this change. When I took the motor apart two years ago to do the heads and cam work, it was still clean as a whistle and good crosshatch patterns on cylinder walls. That was around 150k miles or so too.

Check the owner's manual too. I am used to 5 qt oil changes, but my son's LS1 takes 6.5 qts with the filter change. I love the HUD in his, wish I had it on mine. Like others said, the switch to Mobile One shoud be fine.

Make sure if you do drain the oil, to pull both pan plugs. And then also do not rapidly fill the sump.

To be honest, the legends about changing from dino to synth and back are just that... legends.

Most were created 30-odd years ago when synthetics were new.

Now, there is some truth to switching from dyno to synth with older high mileage engines... The wax build up from dino oil will keep leaks at bay; switch over to synth, with its better detergents and instant leaks! Otherwise, metal doesn't give a shit.

This engine should be fine with Mobil 1 and a good filter, either Wix or K&N.

My 92 has 175k miles on it. I have never had the heads off, but I have had the valvecovers and oil pan off. Both are so clean you can eat off them, so to speak.

Thanks guys! I changed oil in her 07 this afternoon. Used Mobil1 extended life and a Wix filter from Oreilly. Amsoil was too hard to find and I was motivated to get her car done. Drained from both plugs/8 quart capacity. Pressure washed her engine and bay/looks showroom fresh before I changed fluids. This thing is scary fast! Used a leather rejuvenator which took most of the scuffs and dirt off. Yea know I always knew Vettes were fast but this thing is insane.

Not that you notice anything but I put in Extended Life in my 5.3 Vortec @ 125k miles and it started to smoke a bit on startup. I left it in for 2k, changed back to regular M1 and after 500 miles it quit smoking on startup. Strange.

At 135k, the Vortec uses zero oil at 5k intervals.

Thanks for the input Bill. I will keep an eye on it. Knowing my daughter she will probably put 2000 miles or less a year. Previous owner said, the engine never used oil and never noticed any sign of oil consumption on start up.

Bill come to think of it my 57 chevy pick up began the same thing when I change to M1 extended life. My daughter has been using it haul stuff and get the feel of a clutch again. Its a 350/350hp I built 12 years ago when I did the 57 project. Has 20K and does show signs of oil consumption on start up.

I would say if it doesn't leak, then keep on putting synthetic in there.

For filters, you can't go wrong with WIX, they look like quality on the inside.

Maybe change back to regular on the next change, it would be an interesting experiment.

My 77 Chev Van blew a puff on startup at 63 miles, still did it at 200k but didn't use any oil.

CC did oil filter review a while back, excellent work. I think he did a Wix and K&N.

I just recycled a bunch of K&N filters... I use them on both the Vettes and on the Jeep. I live that silly nut on the top of the filter!
