Can I pull the codes on a 2003 S10 4.3 without a scan tool.

It has an EVAP code, and I found the tank pressure sensor wires had been chewed off at the connection. Fixed the wires and the SES light is still on. I will go by and have it scanned again.

did you try disconnecting the battery to reset it? Also, make sure the gas cap is on tight, that's one of the biggest causes of check engine light related to EVAP codes.

Did you clear the codes by disconnecting the battery and turning on headlights to drain any residue voltage. Re connect and check codes.

Disconneted the battery twice with the lights on. The second time I left it for ten minutes. I had two codes P0452 and P0446. Tank sensor and large EVAP leak. I had put a new cap on a earlier this year and the light went off. It now has been back on for a few months. Hoping that one of these codes was causing the other. The canister may be saturated due to the tank sensor being disconnected?

As far as my experience with EVAP codes, it's mixed. A couple times my wife didn't put the gas cap on tight and it came up. On my BIL's 96 s10 the gas cap/gasket went bad causing the leak and sensor. On my wife's rogue there was a bad EVAP purge solenoid that caused it. You might have to look into a troubleshooting chart on one of the s10 forums if it keeps coming back.

You can get an OBD2 code reader for like $40 now. Definitely worth the investment.

Christmas present!

update:
I ordered a new vent valve solenoid. The purge valve opens to create a vacuum in the tank. This checks for leaks (gas cap code). Then the vent valve opens up to get rid of the vacuum pressure. If the vacuum is still sensed by the tank sensor code P0446 is set.

The only other option is a clogged line, which I checked/cleaned last night. Unhooked the battery, and the light came back on.

sometimes un hooking the battery will not clear codes, not sure if this truck is that way or not buy many will keep it in the memory until you clear it with a scan tool.. and in many cases a code doesn't just clear as soon as the fault is gone it takes some time possibly 40 cycles to clear.
