Looks like there is plenty of room on top to add a gun turret.

The LA issue is even worse than the list implies... there are some 88 cities that make up the LA Basin, that's 15 million ppl... more if you include San Diego.

Something more than praying for rain in the Sierra's is needed!

Serious water conservation must take place. We need to figure out a way to capture and reuse runoff. Grey water, for toilets and irrigation, is a very important consideration - the upside is that grey water is a closed loop for the most part, once irrigation is removed from the equation.

The real solution? About 100 million ppl vanish from the face of the USA.

And another 2 billion from the planet. That would probably help the job market too.

The answer is:

Water Carbon Credits

I'l bet we could get Al Gore's firm to broker them for us.

5. San Francisco Bay Area

Major Water Supply: Various, including Lake Hetch Hetchy
Population (U.S. rank): San Francisco: 815,359 (12th), Oakland: 409,189 (44th), San Jose: 964,695 (10th)
Population Growth Rate: 20% since 2000

My take is that most of the "earthers" in SF want Hetch Hetchy Dam removed to return the land back to nature.
The jokes on them within the next decade.

I don't live there, not my problem Actually it is...the Western states have been wanting to siphon water from the Great Lakes for years and years via a pipeline. As far as I know it's still not happened.

Surprisingly, only one of those on the list offered a suggestion for what I think needs to be done - desalination plant. Costly, yes, but in the long run you will need to get the water from somewhere.

Actually, the western cities have been siphoning for many years, destroying farmers and small towns in the process.

You're right. I should say they want to siphon even MORE.

What this nation needs is to "nationalize" water sourcing. Right now, it is very regional. We need a national infrastructure to transport water where it is needed from where there is too much.

The upper Mississippi River floods every year, wouldn't it be neat to take that runoff and send it to Phx and avoid flooding Rapid City, SD?

What about all the rain that struck the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this past year... it simply flooded everything. The storage ponds could do nothing, but wouldn't it be neat if the system could have taken that water and pumped back into the Ogallala Aquifer? The Ogallala is the main water source for the breadbasket. It runs south from central SD, across Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, down into Kansas, Oklahoma and finally Texas and New Mexico. If we can draw from it, why can't we fill the damned thing?

This is what we, as a nation, must do. Our country's infrastructure is in trouble, it cannot support the population we have. To solve this, we must invest in improving it. At the same time, improving it includes creating a national system of protecting our drinking water.

I had this idea years ago... I was living in DE at the time, and it occured to me that we were getting nailed by heavy rain after heavy rain, yet other parts of the nation were parched. Why not capture and distribute this excess?

Think of the jobs it would create, too.
