I have heard this same story from a number of people over the past few years (just heard another one yesterday), and my cynical side makes me think that maybe there are some shenanigans at work. It goes like this:

1). Elderly family member goes in for an exam.
2). Doctor says, "We think you may have xxxxx cancer, and need to do some tests.
3). Much hand-wringing ensues.
4). Tests are done.
5). Tests are inconclusive, need to do more tests.
6). More hand-wringing.
7). More tests are done.
8). More hand-wringing.
9). Happy news is given that elderly family member does not have cancer after all. Meanwhile, thousands of dollars worth of tests have been billed.

I think doctors are afraid to be doctors anymore. Liability? Poor training? Lack of education? I dunno. It's easier to say "lets do this miracle $5000 test" than "I'm a doctor and after doing my research it's xyz".

Would you want a mechanic who said "I am an ASE trained mechanic, but I don't know what's wrong with you're car. I'm going to hook it up to this $3,000 per use diagnostic machine and it might tell us what's wrong."

In general, I don't believe that it is a lack of training... I think it is a lack of knowledge.

We place Drs on pedistals because of their training and status in life. Their egos are stroked to be know-it-alls. They start to believe their own press.

The reality? Modern medical science is so damned complex that no one person can know all of it. Period. This is why there are specialists.

Could happen.....I do know that cancer research is an industry and sometimes I wonder if they really are pushing as hard as they can to find a cure. Decades go by and we still have the same old treatments. I am glad we do and am thankful for whoever out there has benefited from it. I know we are making some progress on certain types of cancer but I'm cynical also........

Hhmmmm. What would you do with entire generation (the boomers) living into their 90's. Not that I care to. As long as I'm functional is good enough for me.
