To me... and my Vette!

It was 13 years ago today that KPotter drove me up to NJ, gave this dude Joe (a member of the guru, but not very active) a check and I drove home in a rather shiny 1992 Polo Green Corvette coupe!

I never expected that buying a car would end up being so, well, life changing.

I met people I never would have met otherwise... well, my wife for starters, and most importantly, but beyond that, the entire world Corvette community.

Everyone here on the Guru... people from the Forum that followed me here... many people whom I call "friend".

It's just been a rather long strange trip... Many folks ask why I still have it.

When I bought it, I thought I would trade it in 3-4 years. But the timing didn't work out, and really, it was running well, and looked good, so why bother.

Then it turned into a goal... 200,000 miles... which I am just a bit over 10k miles away from, but even that doesn't change anything. I have become attached to the stupid car. It challenges me to figure out ways to overcome the weaknesses. And that makes me happy, in a perverse OCD kinda way.

Then comes money... Sure, a used Z06 would kick ass. And would be an easy fix to all of the C4's weaknesses, no question... but then again, a good used Z06 is $35k-$45k. Not cheap. Well, my 92 cost all of $16,800 when I bought it. And it's paid for. Well, what it's worth now is really quite irrelevant to the equation...

And this is because of the simple math of replacement cost. For what I want, that's $40k... what can I do to my 92 for less than that, without running into loans and such? A lot.

450hp only costs about $12k (and that's including getting the trans rebuilt). The car already has good paint and such... A nice 383... and I'm happy. I should be able to build a 383 for $9k and be good. Another $3k for the gearbox (ZFDoc).

So now it's become a goal... to make the bestest baddest C4 I can... next up? Coil overs!

Congrats on your anniversary. And you are right. There are many people I never would have met had I not bought a Corvette. You being one of them. And Ken Potter. I understand the attachment thing all too well.

To many more years

Exactly, Tommy... So many people.

I refuse to list names (or handles) because I don't want to miss someone.

I am sure you will, Matt.

Cars like these are one of three things... a dream that never comes true, one that fleetingly exists and never returns, or one that becomes a lifelong experience. I am working on the lifelong experience.

And I do expect to own a C7 in the not-to-distant future... But I am not unloading the C4 to do it.
