When I was working on the headlight bucket openings, I decided to put the hood on. It was way off, stuck up above the bodywork in the front. That's not too bad a deal but I noticed that the gap between the hood & body was 1/8th (correct) on one side and 3/8ths on the other. The radiator core support was also 1/4 in off.

Another inept bodyshop repair.

So, cut off the of the fenderwells.
The white stripe in the pic is actually a gap where I cut.
This repair will be invisible when done.

I put the hood on and can easily level it now with the surrounding bodywork.

The only way to fix the gap at the hood is to move the fender. I'll move the entire fender, fenderwell etc. back 1/4 inch.

Cut the fender on the top (this will be the only repair on the visible bodywork.

Then cut the fender skin off the doorjam , wasn't real easy because the bond there is 1 1/4 inch deep.

The real, time consuming thing is separating bonds at the firewall & bottom of the fender. Used a cutoff wheel on the fender.

The firewall was tough because of 2 bonds, one on the inside where the heatercore is and one that's buried in the car. You can only get to it bu going thru the door hinge holes. I had to make a chisel out of a piece of 1 in. x 1/8th bar stock, about 2 feet long.

Will use a ratchet tiedown to pull the fender backwards.

Yea, knowing how the car's constructed, I knew it would be an all day job. You have to go real slow in places like the door jam so you don't cut thru the skin.

I also had some hours in measuring 5-6 times, adjusting hood gaps and figuring where to cut so things wouldn't get screwed up and the glass work would be as little as possible.

I also had to pull the fenderwell seals which took an hour.

Yea, really.

It will come our fine. I'll start measuring for the clamp up this morning.

The worst of it (yesterday) is over,

I did lay the hood on yesterday, it will fit great when I'm done.

Yesterday, the fiberglass kicked my ass. Getting the nose of this car up 3/8ths of an inch at the hood was easy with a floor jack. Keeping it there when I let the jack down was the extremely hard part.

After 4 hours this morning, I finally got it. The hood will be flush the whole way around.

Had to use some angle & bolts to keep the LF fender from springing back out.

Now, a couple days of fiberglass work.

I tip my hat to you! That's a lot of cutting to make that front end fit properly.
I'm still curious as to what caused this. Was the front hit hard?

Yea Joel. Hit in the front before I bought it in '73. It looked OK when I bought it, drove it 5 years, paid $3k for it.

A 1970's body shop repair, bondo & pop rivets. The car is now back to all fiberglass, there will be no putty on it that is over 1/64th of an inch thick.

I'll have over 500 hours in the body work but that's about average for a lot of C1/C2 restorations that are being done today.

Gotta get the bodywork done, there's boxes and boxes of shiny, new parts for the chassis in the next room that I'm supposed to be playing with this winter.

Yea, I've been following right along with this build.
Hood does look a lot better now, good job on that for sure.
