Pretty good stuff. I really didn't have 11:00 minutes to watch this right now but I made 11:00 minutes to watch this right now. I was reading Hot Rod back in the 60's way before I could drive. Saw funny cars, dragsters and rails run as a teen. Cars have always made an impression on me. Luckily there were some mags around that entertained my interests. I still read Hot Rod today. There's something about the cars that lure me in.

I almost bought the latest issue of Hot Rod Deluxe yesterday. I think it was the picture of Linda Vaughn on the cover that caught my eye. There might have been a car or 2 as well can't seem to remember.

I quit buying/subscribing to car magazines when I started building cars. Just never found anything interesting in them. I subscribed to Hot Rod and a bunch of Vette mags in high school/college but none since. The people I hang out with are builders and racers so we're talking about cars all the time anyway.
The only magazines I've gotten for years are the NCRS Corvette stuff and "The Wheel" & "SportsCar" from SCCA which is mostly race results.

The Hot Rod Mag show above would have been great to go to. The local shows including Hot August Nights get boring pretty fast, certainly nice cars but very few exceptional cars.

And it's gotten worse for me after going to Monterey (I shoulda post pics of the Corvettes there).

I have a mag rack in front of the throne. There is always something to read when I have a few minutes to kill. A few car mags, my AAA, AARP, Boat US/Trailering and a few strays. Cancelled a bunch of them. More reading than I care to indulge in. Plus they are a good source for Harbor Freight advertising.

No really. The cheapest I found was around $40. The GoldCoast PCA is reviving the autocross program Jan. 5, 2014. I'm planning to attend. Now, what will I drive? 911? 928? 90 Corvette? I'm tempted to try the 928. Think I need a new helmet.

$10 if you have a Kindle

Hopefully you will be running for points.

I could use a helmet but mine cost big bucks.

Go some place and try them on before you buy one.

I only read at night to fall asleep.

I really don't like to read about what others are doing, I prefer to do it.

I had some fun in the last year of my autocross runs. I was beating the times of guys in their Corvettes. C5's and C6's. Of course it was because of the driver, not the car. We had a C5 Z06 that was holding times with a Porsche GT3. Both were experienced and proven drivers.

I meant on a real track.

Of course, I usually see the C5's & 6's in that mirror too.

I was impressed with this 911 though:

You know and I know it takes a deep wallet to play on the "real" track. Sure you can run laps for $250 to $450. Then there are the pre and post track expenses that build over time. Brakes, tires, rotors and assorted things that go bump in the night. That's why I play at autocross. I can go years without major expense. 8 one minute runs don't take as hard a toll on the car. I prefer it to running the 1/8th or the 1/4 but that's just because I run what I brung. Though from what I've seen and heard, the 1/8th and 1/4 can have serious impact on discretionary income. You wanna play you gotta pay. I need to hit 6 numbers on a winning ticket.

Doing it once in a year costs $250.

Driven correctly, the pre & post expenses are almost nothing.

Example: I'm at 5 years, same tires (with a lot of tread left), same brake pads, etc.

So

Speaking of old Hot Rod fodder, today a co-worker mentioned that he was going to Malvern, PA soon. I said, "That's where Grumpy Jenkins is from." He had no idea who Grumpy was, so I explained that he was a racing legend, etc. He later looked him up and sent me this interview:

Well, I've been in that shop, a couple of times. Grump was in partnership with my cousin Dave. And I was on a drag race crew at the same tracks with them ( while my high school friends went to the beach to sit & stare ).
Here's cousin Dave and Grumpy:
