A few C5 guys have reported hub failures over the past month that were exactly what I had in early May. Left rear Timken hub w/ 4-5 weekends. It didn't like the Hoosiers...

Yea, you did the hub in. These cars put a lot of abuse to the rear tires.

Why is that? Because of the rear suspension set-up? Is there a specific reason? Not being a smartass, just not knowledgeable about it Matthew |

It's strange how the hub broke completely at the flange. My guess is the track(Putnam Park)was the primary reason. A few too many right turns pulling 1.6g's.(data aq.) The last 2 turns before the front straight also have some pretty good bumps that load the car up.

No, nothing wrong with the rear suspension, even a coilover setup wouldn't change the amount of loading the rear gets. It's bascially a very heavy car (for a racecar) and the rear hub assemblies were designed for the street. When you put a set of slicks on which have a larger tire contact patch, which allows you to go faster in the corners, higher G forces in the corners put more load on the bearings. And the offset of the wider wheel and tire puts more lever action on the hubs increasing the loading. |

Thanks!
So is there an aftermarket hub that is stronger/more capable? Matthew |

There's a larger spindle and bearing setup, but I don't know if that will cure your type of breakage.
BTW Timken doesn't make ball bearings last I checked. It may have their name on it, but who knows where it's from. I would switch to a known quality bearing mfr first and try again. Jrriflecoach was sourcing some usa made bearings with tapered rollers, sounds like as good a time as any to switch. I think VanSteel had something available also. |

Do you still have the failed part? May I have it please? I will pay for shipping, we want to do some failure analysis and see why it failed. Please call me ASAP, I am working with VanSteel on this to see that that issue goes away.

I don't know about ball bearings but they make hubs according to Autozone and my receipt. I always thought of Timken as being a good ole US of A mfr. but you're probably right about where it came from, who knows?? |
