Lock up torque converters are a great thing.
They allow for better gas milage, sometimes 3 or 4 mpg
They allow rpms to drop 2-300 rpm
Temps in the trans drop like a stone.

The ecm looks for a few things, then it commands lock up. The pressure switches in the valve body look for the pressures required and normally complete the circuit. This allows for the lock up solenoid to activate, opening a mechanical valve in the pump. This valve permits fluid to the converter to lock up the large plate inside. It then allows for the converter to go 1:1. Zero slippage internally allows for the good things I listed at the top of this page.
Failures in the lock up circuit should be corrected asap. Repairs are typically very inexpensive.
To test for proper lock up function, cruise down the hiway at approx 55 mph. While maintaining steady pressure on the accellerator, use your left foot and squeeze the brake enought to light the brake lights. You will hear the rpm climb approx 2-300rpm. When you release the brake, rpm will drop again. I usually do this 2 or 3 times to hear it work and continue down the road. Not a bad idea to check it once a month or so. Quick, easy, free, and no grease under the fingernails

Wow. That tech tip was a blast from the past. Hard to believe it was 4 years ago.

Great info Pete!

But I have a question. How does it work when there is no ECM to tell it when to lock up, as in mine? It has constant voltage until the brake switch opens the circuit (I think).

Lots of ways to do it in the aftermarket. Something must control it. The brake pedal can unlock it, but something has to trigger the ground, assuming the positive side of the solenoid is wired hot (as they usually are).
Simplest was is 4th only lock up.
A 12 volt ignition lead is run to terminal A (lock up solenoid).
Then, a normally open pressure swith is installed into the 4th gear pressure port, and run to the ground side of the solenoid.

Sounds like that's what I have - been wondering how exactly it works. Thanks again!

On my truck, I used a GM vacuum switch, I forget the exact application, but it unlocks the converter during high vacuum (coast) and during low vacuum (heavy throttle) but allows it to lock in between. Then of course run it through your brake pedal switch.

Works like a charm.

believe your switch is from a diesel truck.

Not sure what cars came with it, but I found my old post. IMO this is the perfect setup for lockup control on a carb'd vehicle or anything not using computer control. I did a lot of research on this subject and ran across plenty of horror stories from other "solutions", so it was nice to get it right on the 1st try.

It's actually just a switch that opens on low vacuum. Hooking it up to ported vac is the 2nd part of the puzzle, as it has low vacuum at idle and at heavy throttle. You want the converter to unlock in both scenarios.

I'd like to hear Pete K's input on this.

I used p/n GM 14014519 for the vacuum switch, and 12101914 for the connector. If you wire this inline with your brake cancel switch, and run it to a ported vacuum source, it will unlock the converter under heavy throttle, and also during coasting.

Otherwise, you pretty much always want the TCC locked up in 4th (or 3rd for a th350). Anything else is done within the transmission, and I don't know exactly what pressure switches and wiring setup is needed for that.

It works! I tried it on my 91 on the way home from work just now. Thanks Pete!
