BAD-F******-ASS!

I've always been a fan of the altered wheelbase F/X cars which were the forerunner of modern funny cars and are where that term came from. They started calling these "funny cars" due to the odd appearance that the altered wheelbase gave to them. These first A-body Dodge Darts made some damned cool looking ones and are among my favorites. To be perfect for me, I'd lose the hood scoop and replace it with a hole in the hood with eight Hilborn injector stacks sticking through.
This car is to be lettered soon in vintage, sign-painter style. I can't wait to see those pics.

Maybe ya' had to be there, kiddo..... About as far as you get get from a donk or whatever other kind of POS you're referring to. These were purpose built drag machines at the technology level of the time. They were built a little high to get weight transfer for traction when using the pathetic slicks available at the time. That was the same reason they altered the wheelbase, and later moved the engine back, for better weight transfer. These beasts were running in the nines, often dragging the rear bumper through first gear. Although not as fast, they were unbelievably exciting compared to the cookie-cutter drag cars of today.

oooh... altereds... that's bad to the BONE.

I wonder if that thing started as an old Ramcharger car? If so, it would be worth big $$.

Personally, a GMC 971 sticking out of the hood would look rightious.

A few years back, I saw one of these at a local gas station:

it's not about the look, Johnny. This was done to maximize weight transfer during launch. It was, at least in 1965, advanced technology.

This was also during a time when 7 second cars were insanely fast and sub-5 second cars were thought to defy physics. There aer now streetable 7 second cars and 4 second quarters (er, 1000 ft) are commonplace.

This car is a F/X clone for sure. These guys build them for an eager market. I could be wrong but I don't remember the Ramchargers running anything but B-bodies (Coronets) in the days of transition from S/S to F/X. I think they may have been the first to alter the wheelbase though when the new F/X class emerged.
Thunderbolts rock too although most you see are likely to be clones. Only about 100 were ever made and I believe less than half of those are known to exist. And they were only sold as race cars so you had to be "someone" to get one. They were also a downright, scary handful to drive and so a fair number were wrecked on the strip. Hubert Platt who drove them back in the day said they were by far the scariest race car he ever drove.

I love '63 and '64 Galaxies. I had a few of both including a black Galaxie 500 XL hardtop, similar to the Galaxie 500 HT in that picture. Okay, mine didn't have a chute on the back.....or the jet engine.

I wasn't sure of the details of the Ramcharger cars, but yes, I remember that yes, they did run B-bodies...

The Thunderbolt, I am sure, was a clone. They are uber-rare.

That Galaxy is sick! And that's a ROCKET ENGINE!

In the pic below, notice the front wheels have been moved forward but not the rears yet. Probably late 1964
Resized Image

Here with this '65 Dodge you see that both the fronts and rears have now been moved forward.

This was an early Ramchargers car that they ran very successfully in the C/Altered class. A '49 or '50 Plymouth. Wild, huh? And you might just be looking at the first tunnel ram ever..... An accurate, high dollar professional clone of this car is being built right now. The original is not known or thought to exist anymore.
Resized Image

Not a Ramchargers car but this was a famous race car however. It's a '66 or '67 Dodge Charger and I just love these. I had a '67 Charger R/T years ago with the 440 Magnum, lots of fun!

Pussy! Actually, 425 was just the factory rating on the 426 Street Hemi. With just tuning an easy 500 or more was on tap.

I understand that it was built for speed but I just dont like the way it looks. But I hear you when you say these are fast!

Well, yea, I was being kind... either way, I am a pussy. I drove my brother 67 L71 with mountain bike tires... and I realized I like modern sticky radials much better.

being a mod doesn't require technical knowledge... If it did, then we would ALL be suspect.

Before I even had my driver's license, I was on a drag crew. We had a 59 Vette, 62 Pontiac (national record holder) and a Willys.
The team owner bought a 65 Dodge from Bob Banning Dodge in Hyettsville, Md. One of the "BountyHunters", usually ran S/S but came with the Altered parts. A driveshaft and spring change was about all that needed to be done to convert.
The oblong wheel wells looked a little strange from inside the car.
