What's your favorite?
With the holiday just around the corner, I was thinking about a notable Thanksgiving at our house several years ago. My wife was recovering at the time from labyrinthitis, which is a condition that is kind of like being dizzy and nauseous from drinking way too much, except not getting to do the drinking part, and the effects last for weeks instead of hours, so she was not up to all the preparation effort. So she ordered pre-made stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm in charge of the turkey, and as usual had forgotten to take it out of the freezer several days in advance, so on the night before Thanksgiving, I had it thawing in a laundry tub full of water. In the middle of the night, I heard some kind of commotion coming from the basement, so I went down to investigate. My oldest son, home from college, had decided to do his laundry at 3AM. He had neglected to notice the turkey in the laundry tub, so water had run all over the floor, and the turkey was now bobbing around in dirty sock water. Fortunately it appeared that the plastic packaging had not been breached, so we cleaned up the mess and I went back to bed. Later in the day when we were getting everything ready, my wife put the store-bought mashed potatoes in a crockpot to keep warm. When we went to serve them, they had turned into a kind of lumpy soup. The gravy was tasteless, the stuffing tasted like cat food, and my cranberry salad was runny. Everybody said the turkey was fine, but I thought I detected a faint Mountain Spring Tide taste with every bite. The pie and wine were the only saving grace. I had a lot of wine. We haven't had another disaster like that since, but think about it every year. |

I think my most memorable TG memory was the Longley game uh huh.
#2 was a huntin'/campin' trip. Buddy had a date with that year's homecoming queen at ECU, and me and the roomie talked him out of it. He killed a TALL 7pnter, I took a 4 AND an 8, about 1:15 apart yup. |

Last year my mamma learned a new word. ....
A bad one.... We 'grown ups' were sitting at the table, the kids were in the adjacent living room. My cousin was badmouthing his stepmom and called her by a bad name. About an hour went by and we'd all just taken a drink or bite when my elderly, church-attending mother hollered into the living room at Grant and asked "so Grant, why do you think your new stepmother is a 'snatch'?? We all spit shit everywhere. I will never, ever, ever forget that. My uncle asked her if she even knew what it meant. She said 'of course I know what a snatch is, it's just been a long time since I've heard anybody referred to as one, probably not since her (my) daddy was still alive. |

Keeping the modern age tradition,
we will once again listen to Arlo Guthries "Alice's Restaurant". First we listened to it on vinyl, then tape, then CD, now MP3. Come to think of it, has the US auto industry moved this quickly in technology? |
