When I bought my Ford, I recall a longer warranty period against rust, but maybe it was just for the body, not frame. It was specific in that it had to rust completely through for the warranty to kick in.

Wow sounds interesting. I wonder how many cases there actually are?
Like if you look at the gm dexcool complaints online you will found thousands upon thousands.... Matthew |

Don't get me started on Dexcool. On the side I offer mechanical services to people and I can't even tell you how many simple jobs turned into nightmares because of corroded freeze plugs, bad water pumps, T-stats, heater cores...all absolutely eaten alive from the orange mess inside the engine. I have a freeze plug I kept as a token, that was so corroded I pulled it out of the block with my pinky finger using the huge hole eaten through the center.

The Dexcool works great in a laboratory where no air gets into the system.
Problem is, that's not a realistic expectation in millions o f personal vehicles. Not even close. The decision makers should know better than to have those expectations. Imagine if GM designed an engine that ran forever as long as you changed the oil at 3,000 mile intervals, but said engine blew up if the same oil was used for 3,050 miles. Or even 5,000. Heads would roll. |

Wow.
I am surprised that Toyota isn't taking care of this problem. They, like Honda, are usually very good at taking care of customers before the problem becomes a recall. A rust problem of this nature tells me that the galvanization process; or zink dip; or both; failed abjectly. Insane. |

I have the 2000 Tacoma, with the same issue. Its rusting point was around the frame near the leaf spring mounts. Haven't seen it on mine yet. Keeping an eye on it. They have extended my warranty to cover it.

The problem? Those trucks were MADE here. And these problems follow any maker. Buying American won't fix that... buying better product WOULD. As I said, I am shocked Toyota isn't fixing this. |

I've no doubt about the problems with Dexcool.
I thought about getting rid of it on my Silverado but haven't got around to it. I am puzzled that at 120k & 9 years, I see no evidence of corrosion, the fluid's clear, etc. I'll get around to changing it one of these days. |
