Hi Dan,

Cherry Bomb all purpose cleaner/degreaser can be used on wheels for light to moderate brake dust. Works good on tires, whitewalls, engines, vinyl tops etc. You can dilute Cherry bomb 1:15 for vinyl, leather seats, door panels, carpets etc. Cherry bomb can also be used for household cleaning. Cherry bomb is an all around cleaner.

Brown Royal will clean brake dust better, but not for use on interiors etc. Cherry Bomb is also safe on wheels and painted surfaces. I use Cherry bomb around the kitchen sink and wiping down the kitchen table after meals. Cherry bomb does all. Got your message. Take care.

Hi All,

I switched back to my old wheels and removed the rear lowering kit on my 86 coupe. I could not take the rough ride anymore. Yes, the C6 wheels looked good, but I wont sacrifice my cars suspension, fiberglass body stress and my back. Anyone interested in a set of 18 & 19 Chrome wheels and tires?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I changed out my tires and adapters in 35 minutes. Yanked out that lowering kit too. My car rides like a sporty Cadillac now. It broke my heart to take those wheels off, but it will save my back. And I break it alot at work. I am also not crazy about the hard hitting suspension. Dont forget, we have fiberglass cars. The harder the ride, the more chance of stress cracks on my car. I just got done fixing them and I am not looking foward to restoring another Corvette anytime soon.

I stripped the clear and polished out my original wheels. They look pretty good.Maybe get them Chromed in the future. I do need new tires for them. 255/50/16's. I will post some pictures of the car soon. Take care all.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the kind words about our products. How have you been? Did you ever get your Corvette painted? Glad you mentioned Cherry Bomb all purpose cleaner. Its a safe cleaner like simple green, but it does not streak wheels or painted surfaces. If you are ever in the neighborhood, stop in our store. We detail our Corvettes here on Saturdays and try different products. Take care.

Hi Dan,

Yes, Brown Royal is very concentrated and can be diluted. 1:3 for wheels and up to 1:6-8 for bugs, tar and tree sap on clearcoated surfaces. It will not harm painted surfaces, or service labels in the engine bay. You must use caution on unclearcoated raw aluminum wheels or diamond plate. Must dilute Brown Royal 1:6 or more when cleaning this type of surface.

You can not use a low ph cleaner (acid) or a high ph cleaner (BR) on this type of surface. Hazing may occur and will need to be polished with a metal polish. This is the reason why auto manufacturers clearcoat polished wheels. It keeps the beauty of the wheel, stops it from oxidizing and can be cleaned without hazing. Brown Royal works very well on this type of surface if properly diluted.

I just noticed you live in upstate NY. Aqua Gloss does not dry very well in cold weather. It dries faster here in Florida. Aqua Gloss increases gloss as it dries. Maybe this could be part of the problem. You do not have to let it dry overnight in colder weather. Just let the sun hit the tires and it will dry. Email me your address and I will send you some samples of our other products. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Yes, The sidewalls are stiff on the run flats. There are more choices for tires with a 17" rim. I think I am going to ride on my old tires and wheels this weekend and see the difference. Hey Mike. I like your avitar. I almost forgot about the tires. Lol.

Hello All,

My 86 Corvette coupe (Frankie) looks good with my C6 chrome wheels, but the ride is terrible. I have Goodyear run flats that do not help either. I got a good deal on a used set and although they grip good, they ride hard. If I hit a bump or go over Railroad tracks the car bangs hard and moves sideways a bit. My friggin teeth are shaking out of my head. Lol. I also installed new KYB shocks. The rear is lowered but not the front, because the 19" wheels jacked up the back of the car.

My question: Can anyone tell me if its the run flats or is it the low profile wheels or lowering the back or all? Not much rubber between the road and the rim? My wifes 87 with the 16" wheels and tires have a smoother ride. I might just go back to my original 16" wheels if I cant correct the problem. Thanks.

Hi Dan,

I am glad that you are happy with Brown Royal wheel cleaner. Its very popular and we sell a lot of it. Although, I am suprised that you are not happy with Aqua Gloss tire shine. Its as popular as our Brown Royal. Many customers like it and a lot of car washes use it in our area. It should not sling unless you spray it on heavy and it puddles in the edges of the tires. If it does not dry, it will sling when you take off. Aqua Gloss has a water repellant silicone in it. It will not have a high shine on older dry tires on the first application. If you dilute it with water it will also lower the shine and will not be as durable. It will leave a high shine on a clean tire.

Aqua Gloss is water-based and contains the same silicone that is used in solvent/silicone based tire dressings, like hot shine, wet wheels etc. But solvent/silicone dressings are not enviromentally friendly or biodegradable. The EPA has adopted VOC laws (Volitle Organic Compounds) in many US states.Florida currently has not adopted this law, but will in the near future. Most of our products are VOC compliant including Aqua Gloss.

Solvent/silicone tire dressings will deliver the silicone onto a dry rubber or plastic surface a lot better than a water-based tire shine. We manufacture a solvent/silicone dressing, but I can not ship it because it is flammable and mostly sold to Used car lots that deal with sun beaten vehicles. Also, solvent/silicone tire dressings will sling a lot, and when mixed with brake dust it will stain/deteriorate the paint on light color vehicles and can deteriorate plastic ground effects.

Maybe you got a bad bottle, but I am very consistent when I blend our products. Please call Kellie and we can send you out a new bottle or a different tire dressing at no charge. I will also send you some samples of our Grape Gloss spray wax and our Deep Purple wash & wax soap if you like. Thanks.

Hello All,

Its been a while since I have posted on here. I replaced all the vacuum lines in the engine bay. My idle is not smooth because of the cam in the engine. But I got it to idle pretty good. I feel it needs to idle higher than a 700 rpm.

I have viewed the Batee site and it is very informative. But I have a copy of the Gordon Killbrew electronics book and its very good.

The rack and pinion was not that bad to replace. I had to take the fluid lines from my old unit and put them on the new one. I figured while I was doing it, I would replace the tie rod ends. I adjusted the toe in toe out and the steering wheel is straight and so is the car. Talk to you all soon.

Hello All,

Just a little follow up on a post a while back about my digital dash problem. See the post below. I did everything to figure it out including removing the dash etc. I could also never get that car to idle right. No codes etc. I started checking the ignition system, new cap, rotor, wires, plugs. Then I got to the coil. The tach wire on the coil that has a plug blade was shorting out on the steel frame of the coil. The funny thing is that my tach was working ok. But this was the problem of why my dash was acting up. Something that the GK manual did not mention. Thanks to all that tried to help out.
PS I also installed a new rack & pinion, new tie rod ends, power steering hoses etc. My steering is awesome. Like a brand new car. Take care.

Hello All,

I am having problems with my dash cluster on my 86 vette. Actually it is not the cluster because I switched it with my 87 and it does the same thing. I also have the Gordon Killbrew Digital cluster troubleshooting book but I am at my witts end trying to troubleshoot this problem. My instant fuel and average fuel mileage in incorrect and the upshift light is flashing. The fuel indicators constantly change and are not correct. Says in the book that the problem can be the dash cluster, ECM or Prom.
I replaced the ECM, Prom and had the dash cluster rebuilt. There is a bi-lateral wire that sends info from the ECM to the cluster. I checked the plugs and did a wiggle test, but I did not totally check the bi-lateral wire thru the whole wiring harness. I also checked the grounds on the back of the engine and they are good. I think it may be a bad wire, but I just cant figure it out.I am not putting back the carpet knee panels until I figure out this problem. Its a real pain in the a.. removing those panels. If anyone can give me any ideas, I sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the the info and the picture. I replaced all the vacuum hoses with new ones. Some were missing because the previous owner installed a new engine and never connected them correctly. I will retrace and do it right. Take care.

Hello All,

I am looking for a vacuum hose diagram for my 86 vette. The label under the hood is unreadable. I followed my 87 vacuum hoses but its a little different on my 86. The only problem is that I hooked everything up but I have no vacuum hose connected to the EGR valve. I do not know where on the intake that it connects. Thanks.

Hi C Coaster,

Yes, everything else works fine. Speedo, tach, volts, oil temp, oil pressure, coolant temp, fuel gauge and tripometer. Its just the average fuel, instant fuel and fuel
mpg that are not working correctly. I have a feeling that I am missing a bad ground somewhere. Its a tough one to figure out.

Hey Guys,

Yes, the threads are the same but my brake hoses have a deep threaded socket. But, I figured out the problem. I purchased two sets of GM brake hoses and they did not fit.
It turns out that when C4's were built in the 80's GM used two types of brake systems, AC Delco and Bendix. My 86 has the Bendix brake system. I went to advance auto and looked at their computer monitor with pictures of both brake lines. I could not see inside of the treaded socket but I looked real hard at the crimped ends and mine is shorter than the AC Delco. I took a chance and ordered the bendix. They came in yesterday and Bingo, those were the correct Brake hoses. I asked many Corvette guys and no one knew, not even the auto parts stores knew. I talked to an old timer who was a Corvette mechanic for GM for 25 years. He tells me this today at a Corvette event. I appreciate all the help guys. Sometimes I feel like a Corvette detective that has to solve many mysteries. Brake lines are in, New master cylinder, bled brakes and Frankie is ready to roll again. Take care.

Hi,

Good idea Bogus. I have a place near me called Vette Brakes in St. Pete, Fl. I will go and see them. I just dont know why my vette would be different from other vettes. I know the previous owner did not change the steel brake lines on the frame. Since its an early 86, I am wondering if 84 and 85 brakes hoses are different. Its a pain in the a.., but a learning experience too. I took a few pics, but had a tough time with focusing. Take care.

Hello All,

I am trying to replace the front rubber brake hoses on my 86 vette. I have returned two sets of rubber hoses that are incorrect for my application. The first was a GM auto parts supply, and Ecklers. The problem is where the threaded socket connects to the steel brake line with the flange. My threaded socket is deep and the inside is recessed down in. The replacement brake line sockets are not deep and had a male protruding flange inside the socket. Therefore I can not screw the steel threaded flange to the rubber hose socket. My car is an early 86 with cast iron heads. Has anyone ever had this problem? I must replace the hoses because one is collapsed and pulls left when braking. I will take some pics and post later. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

If you need GM ac hoses check ebay. I have had good luck with a ebay seller called partsladi. She carries all GM parts. I bought everything from her about a month ago when I replaced my ac system. I needed a new Compressor hose, 80 bucks from her. Good Luck.

Hey Guys,

I know there is alot of mods that I can do. I really dont want to go 3:73 gears, but maybe somewhere between 3:07 and 3:73. Maybe 3:55. I still want my highway cruising but some off the line power too. The shift kit sounds like a good idea and so does the B&m shifter. I had a B&M ratchet shifter in my AMX. Can I use the B&M shifter with my center console? How does it fit? If so I would be interested in the shifter if you want to sell it. Also, on a manual valve body, would I have to manually shift all the time or can it be switched between manual and auto? The Art Carr shift kit sounds like what I am looking for. Where do you buy it? Thanks for the info.

Hi Guys,

I appreciate all the info. I was hoping that I did not have to swap out the rear. I thought it was just AMC that was a curse with all the swapping. But I guess if you want to go fast, you have to do it right. I like to get on the vette, but I dont beat the crap out of it. Sometimes I drive nice, and other times I need to release. Ok, another question. I know it wont be equal to a manual trans, but what can I do to the 700R4 to shift it manual or give it a kick? Valve body, etc. In other words I want it to shift, hear those tires chirp and that rear to snap. Just weighing out my options. Thanks.

Hi Bogus,

Which rear end do I have in there now? Also, can you give me more information about the TKO 5spd? The motor I have in there now is probably pushing around 325-350 hp. I have changed rear ends, Gears, transmissions and crossmembers on my AMC cars. I had to fabricate almost everything. Jigsaw puzzle. These are different parts to me. But, I am learning and will just have to do it all again. But Chevrolet this time around. Thanks.

Hello All,

Thanks Anesthes. You are right, thats what they said to me on the Corvette forum a long time ago when I asked.Hard work does not scare me. Hell, I restored my whole vette and there is no way I am selling it. Its got a brand new built up engine. Its worth doing. Its not easy to find a manual vette. This would be the only thing missing for me. Then this vette will be everything I ever wanted in a Corvette. I just sold my AMX so,I can dump a couple more grand into it. I found this on ebay. Will this trans work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/6SPD-C ... ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I know I need the bell housing etc. I also have a 3.07 rear end. I will locate these parts and get it done. Thanks for the valuable info fellas.

Hello All,

Thanks for the compliments. AMC folks usually wave because there arent many around, or they are looking for parts.I have the car for sale on carsonline.com. I like the car, but I dont drive it much anymore. Its been raining here so much and I dont like driving a steel car in the rain. I dont mind driving my Corvette because I know its not gonna rust out. I favor my Corvettes now. I sold off most of my AMC's and bought my Corvettes. I had a 69 Javelin,68 AMX, 82 Spirit & 73 Hornet X. It is very different and my own creation of paint scheme. You can see the Red, White & Blue paint scheme from the front, back, side and air. I did the same restoration as I did on my Corvette, but the engine is really built up on the AMC. The car looks, drives and smells new. I do get alot of attention and thumbs up whenever I drive it. Its definately not a highway car because of the gear and three speed transmission. Heres a few more pics of the restoration and a video.

Here is my other toy. A 1980 AMC AMX Spirit. AMC 360 performance engine. 3:73 gear. I built the motor and restored the whole car. This car was completed in July of 2002. It still looks like it was just finished yesterday. Alot of Engine modifications. No creature comforts here. Fast car. Pushing around 400hp.

Hey, thats why we join Corvette forums. To learn about Corvettes and what makes them tick. I bought a so so butchered Corvette and had no intention of going totally back to original but close. He bought that vette dirt cheap. 2000.00 bucks. Where the hell can you buy a running Corvette for 2k bucks? Hes got alot of room to restore it if he wants to. I also bought an older muscle car with butchered wiring, no computer or sensors. The previous owner started it by jumping the soleniod with a screwdriver. I had to redo all the wiring for the guages and starter. Turns out he did not have the neutral safety switch wire connected from the starter solenoid to the transmission. I did alot of cursing and throwing things, by I got it figured out and the whole car restored.

Yes, you can use silicone GM grease lubricant. But you will pay alot for it. Silicone is an excellent lubricant. Aqua Gloss has great UV protection, durability and can also be used on tires, interior, dashboards etc. I dont think you can use GM grease lubricant on tires dash interiors etc. In other words you can have one product that will do many jobs. I am also not crazy about using WD-40 on your weather stripping. It does have some protection, but it also has solvents in it that have too much cleaning agents in it. It will give some protection at first, but will eventually dry out. In other words, a water-based silicone dressing is safer to use than a solvent-based silicone dressing. I manufacture rubber, vinyl and plastic protectants.I have used silicone in my formulas for many years.I know the protection that it yeilds. I know there is alot of skeptism about silicone, but I will tell you first hand that it is not true. Take care.

I use Aqua Gloss rubber and plastic protectant. Its waterproof, lasts a long time and is water based. I use it on all the weather stripping and lasts under the Targa top. Aqua Gloss will also restore dry rubber and plastic trim. Im not crazy about silicone aerosol dressings. The are made with heptane solvent and silicone oil. Its does rejuvenate rubber, but can only deliver the silicone to the surface with the solvent. Aqua Gloss is available at www.flashwax.com

Hi All,

Yeah, we all dump alot of money in our vettes. But thats just another reason to keep them and drive and enjoy. They will eventually go up in value and we will get it back.
I have about 9 or 10k in my 86. Thats including the car, paint, interior, weatherstriping, wheels etc. I wanted to restore this car with minimal investment. But, I invested alot of my time and muscle. Just be happy that we do not have an 800.00 a month car payment on these cars.

Hi Matatk,

I made my own self bleeder. I used a plastic water bottle with a hole at the top and a vacuum hose thru it. I cant depend on anyone to push the pedal down for me. I do it all myself.

Hi Bogus,

Well, now that you say that, My new ac compressor seems to be dragging. It makes a noise when I turn the ac on or off. Sounds like a squeal. Looks like minimal clearance on the clutch. I just noticed it today. Im gonna be pissed if I have to return that compressor. I will buy the rebuilt for the 87. There are not many parts to replace in a master cylinder. I have dumped so much money into these Corvettes. I cant buy everything new all the time. Thanks for the info.

Hey Bogus,How many miles have you put on that rebuilt from advance auto? Did it come with a resevoir? I can get a rebuilt from Advance auto for 65.00, a new bendix for 138.00 or a brand new ac delco with resevior from the GM partladi on ebay for 144.00. I purchased many parts from her and she has all ac delco corvette parts.

Hi Guys,

Yeah, I guess I screwed up the master cylinder. I did not open the bleeders before I pushed in the Front pistons. I pulled off the master cylinder and bench bleeded it. Rear pushes fluid, front will not. The old fluid was very nasty. I flushed the system with new fluid. I need a new master cylinder. Although I would like to rebuild it myself but I cant find a master cylinder rebuild kit for it. I need to do my 86 master cylinder too. Do they still make a rebuild kit for these master cylinders?

Hi Bogus,
This car is all original so there is no check valves. The brakes were working fine until I replaced the front brakes and clamped the caliper pistons. I have all day tomorrow to fix it. I will check out the master cylinder. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks for your help.

I just read on another corvette forum that all the calipers have check valves in the bleeders and the check valves get stuck and you cant bleed them. Is that true? I also had a hard time bleeding the brakes on my 86. I could not get the pedal to go all the way down, when I opened the bleeder and very little brake fluid came out. Check this out.

this happened to me with my 86 vette, the problem is your bleeder screws, they have small check valves in them. Mine had gotten stuck, so it only bleed like just a little when i pumped them up. Replace them, and that will fix the problem.

Hi All,

I just replaced the front brakes on my wifes 87 today. I used a c clamp to close the piston on the caliper. The pedal was to the floor and the brake light is on. I tried to bleed the brakes and I can get the fluid to flow to the front calipers. It seems like the master cylinder is air locked and I cant get a pedal. Single reservoir on master cylinder and its overfull. Do I have to reset the ABS system or something. I have done brake jobs all my life and never had this problem. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.

Hello All,

I recently replaced the power door locks in my 1986 coupe. You can purchase aftermarket two wire power door locks and they work fine. They are alot less money and they hold up very well. You will have to drill a few holes to mount them but it beats the price of original OEM. Unless you want to go that way. Take care.

LOL. My thought is sand it down, fix any dings in it, prime it and paint it. Theres nothing that can be done except refinishing it.

Hello All,

If you ran this thread in January I would have had a list a mile long. But, I think I can do this now. Frankie needs:

Rear window tinted
transmission leak fixed
adjust drivers door-tried twice and driving me crazy
touch up a few paint spots
wet sand and buff
new wiper washer hoses
new driving light bulb
new valve covers
fix intake oil leak
install relay for aux cooling fan
chrome targa top molding

I know theres more but that is it for now. I remember having notebook pages with 30 items each page of all the parts and items that needed to be fixed. I would check off everything that I fixed. But everytime I did, I added another 15 things that needed done. Eventually it will all get fixed.

Good luck with whatever you decide. But you can always find someone to buy a $4500 running vette. IMHO.

Matthew

Really?

I've been trying to sell my 87 for a while now. Seems most people want a pristine piece at a driver's price????

Have it a $4500.00 OBO and it runs like a bat outta hell and doesn't look bad either.

Has been extremely dependable too.

yet, No buyers

Hi Gordon,

That is a good price for your vette. Its a nice car too. If I didnt have so much going on, I would be interested in it. But, Kellie will kill me if I bought another vette. lol. Can you email me some pics and info about it. I will put the word out in my Corvette Club. Take care.

Hi Brut,

Sounds like the car just needs cosmetics. Been there done that. I paid 3500 for my 86. It has a brand new engine, but it needed paint, interior, winshield, transmission but I lucked out on the tranny. Tires, digital dash lcds, everything. It would be a pain to part it out. I would put it on ebay, and advertise it as a corvette under construction. You were in the process of restoring it but you have too many projects going on and you need to let someone else finish it. I like my black 86, and I am glad I restored it. Good Luck with your decision.

Hi All,

When you put the new rear hatch gasket in do not use any silicone or sealant. If there is any old sealant clean it off with a cleaning solvent Xylene or laquer thinner. The best way to install the gasket is to put the corners in first, then work your way around the top, then around the back. After you are done, treat that weatherstrip with a water based rubber protectant. Good Luck.

Hello Brut,

Give me a run down of whats wrong with the car? Engine, Trans, body, interior, mileage, etc. I would be able to give you my honest opinion. If you are going to part it out, you must look at all the parts that are in good shape, see how much they are selling on ebay, and add it up. Dont forget your labor and time. I just got done disassembling Painting and reassembling a C4 and its alot of work. Good Luck.

Hello Gentleman,

Thanks for the kind words. The car has to be cut and buffed, but I will give it a decent buff and take some pics this weekend and post them. I did wet sand it, but its not perfect yet. Still looks good though. Yes, I have to check and see how much I have that car insured for. I insured it a year before the restoration. Thanks for the reminder, Take care.

Hello All,

Most die hard Corvette people are pretty cool. Those are the ones that love all years of vettes and are respectful to other corvette owners. There are just a few bad apples that we run across from time to time. I never put anyones car down.I dont care which car manufacturer it is. Everyone has different likes of vehicles and I respect thier choice of vehicle. You have to give credit to someone that has restored or purchased a restored show or muscle car. About six months ago I had some dummy that races fords come in my store and talking crap about my Corvette and my AMX. Giving me a hard time, Telling me his lightning truck is faster than my cars. His buddy was polite and purchased products, but I almost threw him out.

Funny thing that he does not live far from me. I guess this economy put a hurting on him because I dont see that lightning truck in his driveway anymore. In fact I saw alot of things being carted away from his home. I was on the way to my store one day and saw him on the side of the road selling fruit, under a small tent. lol. Big shot, shooting his big mouth off. I revved up my engine on Frankie and waved to him. He looked pissed. What comes around goes around. Bye bye big mouth.
