I saw Kenny race Freddy Spencer at Laguna Seca in 83 or 84. As a kid this was the most exciting racing I had ever seen. They changed leaders so much, and that cork screw down hill was awesome to see them lay down and switch back up at speed.
Awesome drivers, the both of them,

Labor is allot of it I am sure. I will get more of the report later tomorrow. The repair person is a straight shooter, and he will tell us what the adjuster told him. This was without even lifting the car on a lift, so something was definitely bad, as it was over 25k.

Red car is totalled, even with all reciepts of upgrades, which USAA wanted to help in assesing cost/value. He cant buy it for parts unless he goes through auction.
This really sux.
This car had all kinds of mods, just makes you want to choke the idiot that caused this.

Airbags won't deploy on rear end collisions... There is also a chance that the airbag was turned off for the passenger, it is optional on some vehicles today. Figure 25mph for airbags, and only on frontal impact. Side impact, well, that's self explanatory.

They must have been right under 25 mph. The airbag wasnt turned off. The kid didnt realize you need to pay attention to the road, not argue with the wife, then press brake and clutch when stopping in an emergency.
Also, you need to have a valid permit, yes PERMIT. Kid hasnt had a license in 5 years, and he is 22.

The wife was wearing the seatbelt. He said he wasnt going fast. Weird, as it is some heavy damage, yet no air bag deployed. So, either the airbag was defective or he wasnt going very fast.
I did question how he stopped, and he said he floored the brake yet it bucked real hard. He forgot to hit the clutch too.
The funny thing about the Harelys was, they were stopping traffic as they were coming out as a group from the boat harbor parking lot, and we were stopping traffic up the hill and around the corner for us to come out of the park.
ed C5 is going to do Tiger Shark bodywork, as the cost is a little lower than OEM panels.
Black Vette , C6, is doing wide body kit, as it is going to cost the same. He will get new tires and wheels and selll the brand new stuff he just put on.
The black C5 ZO6 will be fixed and sold. We are going to steer this 22 year old Sailor to a four door sedan for his wife and child. Lesson Learned.

Well, we were heading to the North Shore today and looking to get some good food at Papa Ole's when things went south. Not one, not two but three Corvettes wrecked...
The C5 ZO6, Black, wasnt paying attention, and rammed into the stopped red C5 ZO6, which was pushed into the black C6.
The Black ZO6 had his wife with him, who is 6 months pregnant. I took care of her, got her out of the car and put her in mine till to keep her cool until EMT's showed up, as she was injured (cracked sternum, but thank God the airbag didnt deploy, and baby is OKAY).
Two hospitals later, here are a couple shots of the guys waiting for X rays, and the cars. The C5's are at a very reputable shop and will be repaired, not totaled.

Of the 3 High Schools, in Alabama, it was just cruising from Enterprise to Ozark Alabama.
In California, we would go from Seaside to Salinas
And in NY, we walked. I was only 13...LOL
After High School though, 82nd Street Portland Oregon.

I think companies outsourcing there products has caused allot of companies to deliver bad parts. I just realized MOOG hasn't been the Moog we were used to as Federal Mogul bought them out and now has most of their stuff done in China.
Be interesting to know how much BOSCH and other companies now outsource.

Two different homes, and both have/had HOAs. In Hawaii, I was given a 100 dollar fine for having a couch in the garage (HOA neglected to come to the door and ask why), with the garage door open. I was cleaning the house while laying flooring. Kind of hard to lay flooring with furniture in there. Did not pay fine.
Fined me another 100 bucks for having a Junior basketball hoop in our driveway. F' them, put it out in our very large backyard (4' wide by 25').
HOA in SC fined me 100 and 20 per day for not paying fine, for having a car parked in front of my house after 10pm. WTF. And they said it was my second offense. Well, it wasnt my car, and the first offense was for the previous owner, which is where the notice of the fine went, to another city which the previous owner graciously sent it to me. I didnt pay that fine.
HOA's can kiss my butt. Not a fan.

I used bearings from Advance Auto and they have held up very nicely. Got lucky, I guess.

My autocrossing and Oahu roads have been bad on mine. My rears had about 10kmiles, or less and their grease seals were bad. They were BCA bearings

He, I just bought two front wheel bearings from Ralph Kinindy, who I also bought ZO7 springs from. They have the Mobil 1 grease in them, are new and were for the Corvette Challenge era when Reher Morrison asked GM to get bearings made with the superior grease within them to last longer.
He may have some left, and they are definitely cheaper than new AC Delco.
He also has a bunch of other Corvette Challenge parts, brakes, suspension pieces etc. Interesting era for our cars.
Worth a try if you are in the market for new wheel bearings.

Here is a Flowmaster Cat back and a stock lt1 cat back. No cats, with long tubes and a 396 LT1.
I prefer the Flowmaster. I like the looks of the Borla/Magnaflow and COrsas, but too rich for my blood.
I may get some Flowmasters and put them on the back, keeping the factory resonator.

I think the problem stems from using glass housings instead of the lighter factory plastic headlights. And over time it was just too much stress on the teeth.

The shaft that goes through the housing that holds the gear/bushings etc was stripped. So, I pinned the shaft to the housing. All good now.

Supposedly the housing is very similar/same as a 4L60E. Other than that, the tail shaft is different, of course.

OK, this peaked my curiosity.

There is an adjustment on the worm gear shaft.

This is not much different from the C2 drive/worm.
If you look at the last 2 pics here, the last pic shows the adj. screw and locknut (lefthand side of the gear housing). that set screw pushes on the wormgear shaft and controls the degree of mesh.
http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules/ ... p?topic_id=12705&forum=31

There is the same slotted screw and locknut on the C4.
But first, check for play in the motor knob. You'll have to turn the knob 1/2 to 1 turn off the stop (when the headlight is fully closed). Now, is there any play in the knob at all either rotating it or pulling it up & down?

There should be zero play rotating it gently back & forth.

I don't think I'd try to adjust that with the motor on the car, I'd do it on the bench. What I would do is lightly tighten that slotted screw down until you can feel it hit the shaft. Then back it off an 1/8th turn and tighten the locknut.

Note, I do Matt's linkage check first.

In the pic, the screwdriver's pointing to the adj. screw.

I will look at it tomorrow. Still fighting a C5 clutch. First ZO6 we did went pretty darn smooth, this one, same year etc, is a pain.

Here is another video with hood open, as you can see it opens and closes fine. But, the motor spins for a while after they are open. The right side motor stops as soon as headlight opens.

I would order a use headlight mechanism from Vette2Vette... There about $100.00 or so. Saves the angst of repair. Just swap it.

Nothing seems to be binding as I watch it with the hood open. Its doesnt do it every time. Its almost as if it looses gearing, as if the teeth are stripped, then it grabs. But, the worm gear is fine. Are there gears in the motor that can be replaced?

No just the worm & the bronze.
Also check the electrics out, FSM chart one (Headlights stay open or closed). Possibly a bad ground (intermittent contact). Probably not but needs to be checked.

In the vid did you cycle the headlight switch on than off?

Manually check:
Spin it open by hand with the knob (yea, I know, it takes forever).

Get the door open close to where you saw it stop. Put some slight resistance on the door with your other hand and spin the knob. Do you feel anything as it moves thru the place where it stopped before? More play in the knob, play in the headlight assy.?

You will have to check for looseness (or bind) by hand.

I did cycle the headlight switch in the video.
I will manually open it and check for bind.
I will also look for bad connections etc.
I am able to turn the knob and manually open the headlight.

As you see in this video, the headlight goes halfway then stops, as the motor continues to spin. It shuts just fine.
I took the headlight apart, the gears (bronze) were fine, along with the grease and delrin bushings. So, is it within the motor. All the links associated with the headlight are fine.

I understand your pain. I was recording the F1 race, and unknown to me it was red flagged for ever. After I started watching it, I realized it and after four hours I decided to go to the channel shwoing it and I got the last lap live, so I missed most of the race, yet saw the last lap. Pissed me off. Only race I watched was a ever boring, why bother anymore, NASCAR!

I took everything apart. Nothing damaged, or stripped. I then turned the motor by hand using the knob. Everything turned fine. The only thing that can strip is the metal rod that goes through the brass gear, as it has teeth on it to. But its fine and so is the brass gear, and it went on tight. I put a little loctite for shits and giggles on the rod.

Well, here is my bushing. They all are the right size and in great shape. The bronze gear had a few pieces(very) of old bushing or dirt on the gears, but was clean otherwise.

Thats a 7/16 wrench to show it meets the correct size of less than .465.

I am wondering if I can just pull the roll pin, then the cover where the gears are. Seems like we take allot off to get to the gears when they are under the cover/gear, which has three bolts and the roll pin keeping the shaft in.

I replaced the gears years ago with bronze and the delrin bushings. I cant believe I need to do it again.
When I turn the lights on, the drivers side only goes half way and the knob on top is spinning pretty darn fast. Once it stops, I turn it to get the light all the way up.

He did ask to be involved in the whole process. Little Jedi will be, trust me.
