There are a bunch of steps in the FSM before you get to here, right? I'm not positive, not having a MAF car. I think there many more MAFs replaced than there are bad MAFs. Many more ECMs, too. I have heard of subbing one on the car from either another Corvette, or even an F body. Maybe a friend has...

First off, loosen, clean and reinstall all 4 of your battery cable connections.

Fuel related. Either it's not priming correctly, so you have to give it a 2nd try, or it's flooding and the first set of cranking is needed to clear it out.

Does it happen on cold starts, warm starts, or both?
Are you turning the key off before popping the hood?

Next couple of times you get in the car, cycle the key on, then off, then wait 10 seconds, then turn it on and try starting it. If this starts every time now it could be a priming issue.

If not, then the next couple times try flooring the gas, cranking it over 2 or 3 times, then stop, then start it normally. If this starts every time now it could be a flooding issue (injectors or FPR)

When it doesn't start, what is missing? Does it crank over and not fire or is it that it won't crank? If it cranks, are the plugs firing? Is there fuel? Is it flooded because of a leaky injector or two? A bad fuel pressure regulator? It is doubtful that opening the hood plays any part other than the time delay involved. "Any ideas?" Lots of ideas. It is just going to take some logical order, good old fashioned trouble shooting, and some basic common sense.

Maybe opening the hood has nothing to do with it. At that point youi've tried to start, maybe it needs a second then it is primed and ready to go?

I've also seen the lug wrench/handle under the hood of some cars, but I don't know if that was from the factory.

Or in a similar scenario, rather than have the p brake fail, after the timing is set, the idle mixture screws adjusted to perfection, and it idles like a fine Swiss watch, you decide to blip the throttle in celebration of a job well done.

Let's imagine that you're just a dumb-assed kid trying to muck around with the timing and idle on your old Grand Prix, having it in gear with the parking brake on, and the parking brake decides it's finally had enough of that crap, so the car starts creeping forward toward your future father-in-law's newly-painted garage door, and you're too brain-dead to just pull the coil wire to kill it. Well, if that happens, don't stand in front of the car trying to push back like Superman, because it just won't work.
