So, I think my Oil Pressure is a bit too high. Pins the gauge at startup for a few minutes and typically runs higher than 60 wile driving.
Still has break in oil, thinking of changing it. What is the lightest weight oil available? I'm thinking 0-30..If I put in thin oil, the pressure should drop. And please, don't try to convince me heavier oil is better, you're wasting your time... |

Just a few thoughts:
Do you know the viscosity rating of your break-in oil? What is your oil pressure at idle when the oil is warmed up? What is your oil temperature? I'd be as concerned about oil pressure at idle than at speed. Are you using a defective or aftermarket oil filter with too high a relief pressure setting? That might might cause the pegged reading on startup. Can you get an independent measure of your oil pressure? Your sender might be bad. For your replacement oil, how about 5W-20 rather than 0W-30 ... I'd rather have the hot viscosity lower rather than the cold viscosity to reduce the oil pressure. |

What weight are you running now? 5W-30 is the factory recommendation. Have you checked the oil filter for clogging, since you say you have the break in oil still in perhaps the filter is clogged with particles from the build and it's not the oil causing the high pressure? or could it just be tight tolerances, did you just rebuild the motor? |

The motor isn't a factory motor.
What is in there is Castrol 15-40. I'm thinking of going 0-30 or 5-30. It's not a stock motor, at all. I like Hastings filters. I think I'm going to change to that. |

I'm running a high volume pump. It's 10% over stock, some high volumes are 25% over stock..
I figured with the bigger, 7 qt, pan the HV pump would be ok. |

I recommend K&N oil filters. Very nice pieces.
The 5-30 Mobil 1 (or other synthetic) should be perfect, actually. 15-40 is rather stout, really. |

I'll try 5-30 see how it goes, but 8 qts at a time is expensive. |

Oil weight is a result of internal tolerances.
If you run too heavy an oil in a newer engine, there is a chance the oil won't make it to where it must... and not in the volume needed. Oil weight - ie, heavier - is not better. It is a recipe for disaster if misapplied. |

My 91 reads high regardless of oil, say 50 and up, presently using 10w40 Castrol syntec, K&N filter, 46k. There was a service bulletin for 90,91 #91-451A-8C about high readings due to a faulty resistance wire in the pressure sensor.

BTW, what filter is in there now? More filter area is better, so long as the pleats aren't too crowded, like the PureOne. A restrictive filter will give you a higher guage reading and less oil flow.
K&N is ok, but if you want a really good flowing filter, try the Mobil M1-302. It's the same price as K&N, but the can is literally double the size of the Delco filter and a little larger diameter. And if nothing else, it can hold more dirt before it reduces flow or needs changing. BUT, if you have the Z51 sandwich oil cooler, ground clearance and filter puncture from road debris becomes a concern. In which case you may consider the K&N, it's medium length and has a thicker case. Mobil m1-302: Delco size: |

In my experience a bad sensor or clogged sensor fitting will cause the guage to hover above zero with the engine off. 1990 at least uses the cheaper sending unit though. |

Having spent high school and college working in hot rod shops, the only difference in those filters is the size. I happen to remember the Fram numbers as being PH13 or PH30. The PH30 is larger, but fits exactly the same. The reason for the short filter on our cars is ground clearance, but either will do. I use the largest filter available that will fit. |

I agree that it could be the sender but I think you should put on a good machanical gauge and see where you're really at. Barring restrictions like the filter previously mentioned, the relief valve spring in the pump could be part of it especially since it's an aftermarket, the higher volume shouldn't make a difference. It's possible that tighter clearences in the motor since it's new but you can only go so tight on any of the bearings. How many miles on the breakin? If it makes any difference, I'm running 5w30 Mobil in my racecar (4cyl) with tight clearences seeing 110 psi cold and 55 hot (drysump), 10 psi at idle. In the vintage nascar motors, we see over 60 psi hot all the time with 5w30 Mobil, no problems. |

My part numbers may be dated. That was 20 years ago. My point is that there are multiple filter sizes that will fit. they are of varying lengths.
The insides on the larger filters are different. As I understand it, it is a measure of total surface area inside the filter should be the same. The smaller filters typically do have different guts. That does not make them incompatable in different applications. |

Yes, but some of them are full of cardboard and leaky check valves.
The refrigeration supply shop has some 10" and 12" long filters, but I don't think they'll clear the driveway. They use em for filtering oil on large chillers. The threads and oring look like the common gm arrangement. |

I use a "PH5" size, which still cross references with NAP Gold/WIX. I have Long Tubes and it is right at the headers.
There are cross references available online. On my LT1 I went to the older style filter with the long tubes for extra filtration, and got rid of that little offset adapter from the factory. |

Oh, no. I am not saying they are all interchangable.
I am saying from my direct experience, the threads and the gaskets that will mount correctly come in a number of different lengths. And THOSE are interchangeable. There is more than one filter that will fit most engines. The larger ones seem to have less dense concentration of filter materal, the smaller ones have more dense material. However, Gen 1 and Gen 2 small blocks, I do not know if they are interchangeable. |
