Wasted another bullet. Ran low 12's in the 1/4, and when I pull the breather, it puffs like a choo-choo train.
What to build next.................

What did it normally run in the 1/4?

Any idea what killed it? Normal wear over time, or detonation, or ???

How much cabbage you looking to spend on the next build, what are you looking for power wise and all that?

It typically ran 12.00 on a good, cool day, and as slow as 12.50 on a sweltering, humid summer day. It has not slowed down, it just started using oil. I suspect I may have detonated it early on and broke a ring or ring land. On the other hand, it doesn't make noise.

I don't think I killed it yesterday. It has been pumping oil for a while, and I assumed it was valve seals. When I went to top off the oil today, I was too lazy to shut the car off, so I opened the oil cap and it was puffin like mad.

I have to ponder my next move.

I may. I need some time to think it through. My first thought is to go bigger. However, the motor now is down on compression, and goes bottom 12's. Pretty sure that a good freshenup, and some of my spare parts (converter, intake manifolds, etc) can tweak the combo to mid 11's, if I put my mind to it.
I don't want to do a rollbar, so 11.50 is as quick as I can go anyhow.

On the third hand, I am greedy, and want more. Maybe I will drop in the 406 I have on the stand. Decisions, decisions.

Gee, Pete. That really sucks. Maybe just a basic rebuild for now? Thought you wanted to save the 406 for your clone project?

I have 1/2 a dozen blocks laying around, so that is what I am thinking today. I have been running cast pistons for years, and have been very lucky. I am thinking about a basic build with a set of SRP pistons for security.

Look at the bright side you have the skill set to make it better and I'm sure you will.

Thanks man!
I am humbly confident I will. I think my last machinest goofed the cylinder wall finish, and that may be why I am suffering from blowby. My biggest challenge now is to decide what route to take.

I have an Eagle forged rotating assembly with JE pistons, and custom billett splayed main caps. Main caps don't mean much since I'm only revving to 6300 but....

I've detonated on motor alot working out the tune, detonated on the spray more than I'd like to admit on a shot bigger than a 200, melted the spark plugs completely, porcelain and all, and melted the exhaust valves on the new AFR's. After all that, the shortblock has no blowby whatsoever and is performing flawlessly to date, running very bottom 12's on motor and mid 10's on spray.

Point is, an off the shelf rotating assemby from Summit and your skills can have you a nearly indestructible 383.

Ooh, if that's the case, put a 150 shot to it. It'll seal right up.

Bummer....

My old 383 was a user too in its last few years..... It never pumped it out visibly, but it would lose 1/2 quart after a 2 hour drive to the track, race all day and then come home......

I had the same dilema on what to build.... thought long and hard on it. If I was to start again today, I'd probably go a different direction than I did..... its a tough decision.
