Well I got some Castrol TWS from a BMW dealer for my tranny. $19cdn/bottle! Now I need a 17mm Hex socket. Can these be purchased individually somewhere or do I need to buy a whole set? Does it matter if it's 1/2" or 3/8" drive?

I got mine at Sears, they had both the hex socket and the allen key in 17. Some Sears will have it, some won't, depends on how large their tool dept. is.

Sears. That's where I got mine.

Another thing... get a bolt from a hardware store... and a couple of nuts... the head of the bolt needs to be 17mm (see where I am going with this?).

The 2 nuts become jamb nuts and when I did this, I used a big assed pipe wrench. But a 17mm socket on a breaker bar works, too. Oh, get the nut as a metric grade 8; what's that, 10.8 or something?

Autozone sells a 3 piece allen key kit that has a 17MM in it. It's $9 US. It also has the right size allen for the pivot stud in a ZF6.

And it's normal inventory. One Kragen I was at had a similar set also. I couldn't find any metric at Sears bigger than 10mm at any that I checked.

It uses s 1/2" drive. Be sure to remove the fill plug before you touch the drain plug. Because if the drain plug comes out, but the fill plug doesn't budge, you're gonna be parked for awhile.

I agree. I bought the Craftsman 17mm allen because they didn't have it in a socket. Didn't think Autozone would have had this so I didn't bother checking there.

I've gotten a few tools at AZ and they aren't bad quality at all.

SAE grade 8 = metric 10.9

Well the gray tool 1/2" drive 17mm hex socket was $20 and a regular l-shaped 17mm allen wrench was $7. It worked fine. One more job done.
