88BlackZ51 Where to install MSD Box/Coil Blaster/Map Sensor?

The build is coming very close to turning over for the first time. We almost had the car started the other day, but we had a fuel issue.

I hope I can get some help from you guys. I would love to see some pictures in regards to where you guys installed your MSD box, coil, and Map Sensor. Some detailed pics of the brackets that you fabricated would be cool as well.

I saw where AKS Racing(aaron) placed his coil blaster behind the brake booster, but doesn't appear that it will fit at that location.

Below is what I have to work with.

Thanks!!!

In my 89 the MSD 6A I had was mounted up front under the Driver side headlight area (near the charcoal canister. or at least that general area.

I had a coil like that and made a bracket to mount to the rear of the Passenger side head (there should be enough room there for you too)

the FAST ECM I would suggest near the battery or the other side by the heater box, which ever looks for 'fit' and wire better for you..

I might have pics.. need to look at home

on the passenger head, the end closest to the firewall there should be 2 or 3 bolts ( like the front end on the Left side.

I made a bracket that bolted to those and then bolted to the coil (HV tower up) and mounted it to the head..

I will be honest... the MSD box is best left on the shelf. They are really not all that reliable.

With most of these electronics, the farther forward, the better you are. most aftermarket firms don't take the time to make their stuff heat soak proof...

They tend to have water infiltration issues.

I know several autox'ers that have removed theirs.

Great on the track though.

That said I bought an MSD opti.
I won't be driving it in the winter anymore though.

Although I've never run one, I've heard of a lot of failures with them. I don't know why.

I am interested in the FAST, though. Can you give some more info on your setup?

As far as mounting options, are you opposed to mounting inside the car, ie the passenger footwell?

Matt,

I have a good ECM for your car, which will retain all the LCD dash functions as well..

http://www.dynamicefi.com/

I have a list of wiring changes for the 88 somewhere

the MSD means multi-spark discharge.

In short, you are arc welding the cap/rotor. Everytime the coil fires, it is blowing out several zaps. To me, it is abusive to the coil and the cap/rotor.

EVERY hot rodder I talk to has had these things fail. It is either the biggest urban myth or the biggest flop. I don't know.

If it was me, I would have gone with www.eficonnection.com and convert over to a full on LSx ignition.

If money grew on trees I would of prob went that route. I have spent enough allready with this 421 project.....

Found a sweet spot for the coil and MAP sensor today. Next is fabbing up a bracket for the MSD.

I put mine in the battery compartment on the wall towards the front of the car. Ran the wiring with the positive cable to the starter and up.

I have my Crane HI-6 mounted on the passenger side, rear part of the wheelwell. Little bolts come out through the wheelwell, reach above and behind the tire to put the nuts on. Can barely notice it is there. It's kind of at an upward angle so I can see the adjustment screws for the rev limiters and turn them easily.

Blaster coil is mounted way out on the passenger side, kind of near the ESC module.

When I had mine I made a bracket that sat it above the M/C. Close to the hood but it worked.

That's almost exactly where mine is mounted. Why do you need a shorter coil wire? It's only a couple feet long. I inserted mine inside a small diameter heater hose, then ran it right across the top of the heater core box. Good wires, good ignition, what is the problem with that length of coil wire? Mine is putting out enough spark to light off alot of nitrous on a high compression engine and put me in the mid 10's.

As a side note, I'm proud of you for saving the A/C system. Most of my friends tried to talk me into getting rid of mine. I'm glad I kept it, and glad to see you didn't hack yours either...............now get rid of that damn smog pump!

I don't see why you could not. Although the plug boot side might not work
