Thought I had a head gasket leaking but it was the intake manifold gasket

Ok, I got it all back together. I am sure that the timing is off a little, I will fix that but it has one hell of a miss and it seems like something is binding and then letting go with a sort of crunching sound. It is near the front of the engine. I did notice that the center bolt on the crank pulley was loose so I tightened that while I had it apart, is it supposed to be slightly loose?
Could that be causing some sort of binding?

And no, the hub bolt should not be loose.

my thought too.. I'd recheck the spark plug wire routing and re-check the timing...

Jeff,
My concern is with the bolt length issue you mentioned at the end of your original post. As CC posted, all 12 manifold bolts should be the same length and no more than 1-1 1/8". If you installed longer bolts than this, depending on where you installed them, they could be hitting pushrods.

I was wondering if that were possible too. I know that the bolts I put back in there were the ones that came out of there. I bagged them seperate from the runner/plenum bolts.

I will recheck the plug wires tomorrow night.

The intake base bolts were different lengths on my '91 also, Torx head. Didn't notice it on the way out, the diff. was slight. Don't remember where I put the 4 longer ones, probably at the corners.

I didn't think that it really possible for the manifold bolts to contact the pushrods. If that is the case I hope it has not caused any serious damage since I've only idled it for a couple of minutes.

Swapped out one of the longer bolts on the even number side of the engine. It looked like it could have most defintely been hitting the pushrod. I also discovered that I'm an idiot who had #5 & 7 plug wires crossed on the cap.

Thank you everyone!

Glad you sorted it out! Also, make sure to keep those plug wires off the exhaust manifolds

Joe, I think this was a '91 only thing.

The plug wires are free and clear of the headers. Good looking out though Matthew.

Hey Jeff,
Not too bad. You posted a question about binding and in four responses, you had your answer! With Josh posting twice and Rick posting an agreement with Josh, you really had an answer in two. Not as well as you did on that OTHER site where you asked if too long intake bolts could hit pushrods and got the standard bickering immediately, [yes; no they can't; yes they can...]. They do get a lot more traffic there though.

Haha, you called me out.

The one plus that I got on the other site was the picture that was posted of how the pushrods ran right under that one bolt location.

I have no doubt that the level of maturity and respect is way higher on this forum and the bickering is non-exsistent here

The lower traffic frequency here is the only reason I posted on that other forum. If you look at my posts over there I usually just troll for parts

Jeff - no one is criticizing you for going over there

I still check CF for parts all the time. And the c4 tech archives. The current stuff I don't care about, because many of the knowledgeable people have already left or moved up to newer models. But I'll take good, correct knowledge and experience from anywhere I can find it.

My favorite is when I search for something in the tech forum and come across posts from members that I know are over here such as bogus

I'm absolutely with Matt on this. Take correct info from any source. And please don't think I was criticizing for posting there. That was a good picture. That is what I had pictured in my mind when you mentioned the longer bolts. Too bad I couldn't post what was in my mind.

The key is correct info and other sites seem to be filling up with what I call post whores. They'll reply to every post whether they know anything or not. If an OP doesn't know better (and if they did, they wouldn't be asking for help), he or she may listen to this useless drivel and make their problem worse or spend time and money going down the wrong path.

Sound like your good to go now though. Nice work.

I didn't take it as criticism by any means. If someone here posted a problem and I found the resolution on the other forum I would lead them to it. We are all fighting the same battle. I too hate the post whores and reserve my posts for things that I either have experience with or have read about somewhere that I deem a reliable source. Such as here

Thank you all for helping me out with the intake gasket change. It actually runs a lot better than it has since I bought it.
