My '87 convertible is a little incontinent and it's been growing worse over the summer - I've had the rear seal on the transmission replaced in May which cured the major leak but now the trans is leaking again.

The local dealer suggested that it's the transmission pan leaking (OK, I should be able to fix this myself), but that there is also a leak at the rubber gromment/seal for the dipstick tube. Supposedly changing out the latter does require a partial removal of the transmission with the associated expense and this also renders the leak unfixable for myself as I don't have the necessary gear to remove the transmission.

So, can this seal be changed without (re)moving the transmission? An acquaintance of mine who happens to work on transmissions a lot suggested that removing the dipstick seal should be possible once the pan is off, but the trouble is of course getting the new seal back in...

Any suggestions?

uh, yea...

The dipstick is retained by a bolt on the back side of the right head. Remove bolt, tube comes out.

Replace grommit, reinstall tube, done.

Gang, am I missing something here?

Welcome to the forum. I get down to Gardnerville once a month or so, got a friend who has a machineshop there.

Did the same dealer do the seal?
I'd think if they were any good, they could tell what was leaking.
Yea, the pan gasket's not a big deal. Not sure on the dipstick seal, but someone here has to have done it before.

Yea, this can be done with the trans in place. Like Andy said, unbolt tube and remove it first. Then it's just a matter of prying out the old gromment. And it's even easier with the trans pan removed. That way you will be able to see if any pieces of the old gromment fell down into the pan.
Now, it does take some force to install the new grommet. But nothing fancy, just getting a leverage point and forcing grommet into the hole. Lubricate with trans fluid and shove it in.

BTW, getting the old one out can be a real PIA. Be careful not to bend the dipstick or crease it with vise grips like many have done.

If it's anything like the LT1, replacing the dipstick grommet in-situ is a major PITA.

Just do the pan gasket and see how much of your problem it fixes - probably 99% of it. Bad grommet will generally drip a little but not major leak.

If you are changing the dipstick boot seal, also change the boot seal for the tv cable. It is a few inches back from the dipstick tube seal.

I'd get that new dipstick grommet from the dealer as I'd say it probably is a better qualiy than from the local parts store.

I've replaced that grommet. It is a pain getting to the bolt for the dipstick tube. I had to use alot of extensions and a couple of ujoint knuckles.

You don't have to drop anything. But would be a good idea to drop the pan to make sure nothing gets in there. I like the rubber Felpro tranny pan gaskets.

You could price around for a shop to replace that grommet.

No, the rear seal was done by a shop in Vegas that seemed to be doing reasonably decent work. They also changed the trans fluid (so they had the pan off) but it was pretty oil tight for a Corvette for a while.

I'm keeping stum on that one, but I guess if you go to Gardnerville from time to time you probably know which dealer I'm talking about.

I'll probably have a word with another shop in town that left a better impression with me to see what they have to say.

The plan was to drop the pan first, which should hopefully be easy with the car on a set of jack stands, then remove the dipstick tube and grommet. That said, I'm debating having a shift kit fitted at the same time and I'm not sure that I want to do that myself...

Oh well, I've got a couple of months to chew on that one, I've got to digest an emergency repair on my winter truck first.
