My car is a std 94 coupe, and was wondering if it would be worth changing out the steering rack to the Z51?

Late Z51 racks have the same ratio.
I'm putting a quick ratio in mine, which requires a bit of mixing parts. Newer style ends on and older style quick ratio rack. Big difference in the ratio. If your and autox'er it's worth it. |

Worthwhile. Driving a base rack compared to my Z51 rack feels like driving a school bus.

I resurrected this thread because I don't know if I got enough information the first time around. While I have the motor out I might do this if its not too much hassle and it is a viable swap into the 1994. Brian said something about converting an old Z51 rack to a newer one by swapping out ends.
Does anyone know anything about this conversion? |

Don I found this link which deals with an 85 wanting quicker ratio. The people who sell the quick ratio boxes should have some info on how to do the conversion, you would think. You may have seen this already.

Yeah, I saw that one. I just had a guy from one of the NCCC clubs up in PA send me an email with the part no. I need. I got a lead from a CF guy then followed up with this guy I knew that races a 94 Corvette in NCCC AX.
"It is Rockauto part number 22128 and cost only $127.79 plus shipping. It is the part number used for a 89 Z51 car." I will be ordering this in the next week or two and doing the change before my motor goes back in the car. There is a lot more room to work with the motor out. I'll let you guys know how it works out for me. |

My tuner is doing this swap for me.
It' a lot easier to do with the engine out. |

I have an 85 and replaced the rack last year. I looked at one from Rock Auto but went through Autozone. Ease of returning the old rack for the core charge made up my mind. I went with the "sport" rack which is 2 turns lock to lock. It was a direct replacement to the old rack and everything bolted up.
