Since he's always making fun of me for being on the Guru when he knows I'm at work...
Dad bought his '91 couple of months ago and he's been repairing some horrible body repairs. Any, he just found out today that there are wheel locks on the car. He doesn't have the key or the little cards that tell you which key you need. From his description over the phone they sound like the factory lug locks. Can he take the VIN into a Chevy garage and order the correct key? Any tips on how to get them off another way? I don't think he's putting them back on. Thanks, Jeff |

You can get a socket that is just a bit too small and beat them on with a hammer then loosen the nut.

If you have a tire shop that you do business with they might do it for free.

He doesn't have it ready for the road yet. I could have sworn that there was a tool the shops use to get them off if the customer doesn't have the key.

Do you think the Sears would take the socket back after that? I guess if he could do that without smacking the wheel with the hammer it might work. Maybe this will work? $23 on Amazon Attach file: wheel lock removal.jpg (11.87 KB) |

The mechanic at my dealer that specializes in 'vettes has a set of them for emergencies like yours. I don't think there are too many variations.

if you have access to a welder and some bolts you can always weld a bolt on to the lock.go i have done in the past and it works like a champ. just watch out for the sparks they can damage the wheel.

The dealer I used to work for had a master set of the GM keys they could match it up to, but the car would have to be there they wouldn't lend out the set. but if he wants them off, something like the tool you pictured is what you need, and as said you could try hammering on a socket to get them off as well, but the tool is the best bet though the more expensive route..

I thought I saw ecklers or one of the Corvette catalogs selling them. GM only had a few different ones. Hell, maybe someone here has it if you take a pic.

I will see if he can get me a pic. He's in PA. He needs to move closer so I can help him with these things and he can help me with things.
