TommyT-Bone A/C compressor / clutch question .....

I started the 91 to move it. When I pressed the A/C button and it started squeeling then smoke poured out from under the hood. Upon inspection I see that the soft rubber ring has melted inside the pulley wheel and the outside metal ring now has a lot of play. The wheel no longer engages to the pulley when I hit turn the switch on. Black goop is present that leaked out from the back of the black soft rubber ring. Thoughts ..... Compressor? Clutch?

I just saw compressors w/clutch (oem) on ebay for $470. I was gonna jump the gun but guess I'll find out what's wrong before I jump. I'll report my findings.

Hey BillH. Did you get your winter A/C clutch issue fixed this winter?

Aaa, the last time I mentioned my a/c clutch was like 4 years ago. Sure you mean me?

My clutch squeals when blipped off of idle but works OK on the road. I really don't use the a/c here muck.
The squeal is due to the clutch having too much of a gap.

I used to know an a/c parts website, but would have to search for it now.

No worries Bill. You know I'M not gonna be working on it.

I'll let y'all know the findings. It's gonna cost me for an hour and a half of labor or so I figure.

The front pulley comes off pretty easy in order to check the compressor. Mine ended up being a bad coil, that melted my outer pulley. I would almost lean towards the compressor, since the belt was sqealing. To me this would mean their was a bigger load on the belt than there should have been.

When ordering bits, check for parts optimized for R134... unless there is a stash of R12 in Miami I am unaware of, that is.

There are lots of stashes in Miami...but I digress...

Tommy, are you able to pull the pulley off yourself and check?

Here's a tidbit from our friends at the other place.

This sounds like mine ....

A/C clutch or the bearings will leak out some nasty black stuff that makes a mess under the hood when the clutch bearings finally die.

If you remember, last week I cleaned up the engine bay. Could this be a coincidence? I suspect that some moiture may have collected and possibly "locked" something up. No, I did not hammer the pulley area with a water stream but there was water ..........

Compressor failure is the verdict. New one ordered with clutch. Won't get it fixed till the end of next week after the part comes in. I will never - ever go through another summer in a car with no A/C in SoFlo. Matter of fact, I better get some driving in the next couple of months before monsoon season begins.

If the compressor seized then metal went thru the system. Unless you want to take a chance on doing it over again real soon make sure to change the drier or acculator, and have a nitrogen flush done.

And replace the orifice tube, too. There are several types of flushes, I can't comment on which is best.

I agree with both of you according to what I've read. If your already in that deep might as well do it right.

Where did you get the compressor? Same thing here, compressor failure. Pulled the orifice tube, full of metal shavings
