http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/05/31 ... welfare-drug-testing.html

It's not for all public aid (yet) but for those applying for the program "Temporary Assistance for Needy Families"

I say kudos to the Gov. It might be purely political in nature, but I like it. We need to start acting more for the working class and do less bending over backwards for the non-working class.

Matthew

a few points:

Quote:

The law, which goes into effect on July 1, will mean about 4,400 drug tests per month, according to the Department of Children & Families. Taxpayers will reimburse welfare applicants for negative drug tests, which can cost between $10 and $25.

Positive tests will carry an immediate six-month ban on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. A second positive test will result in a three-year ban on state assistance.

Other details in the law:

• The Department of Children & Families must inform applicants that they can avoid a drug test if they do not apply for benefits.

• The state must assure each applicant “a reasonable degree of dignity while producing and submitting a sample.”

• Parents who fail drug tests can get benefits for their children by naming a state-approved designee to collect the money. That designee must also pass a drug test.

About 233,000 Floridians applied for cash assistance in 2009-10, including 114,000 families, according to DCF statistics.

This month, 93,170 Floridians received cash assistance, a drop of 8.3 percent from a year ago.

Works for me. Why shell out cash to someone who will snort it up their nose?

I believe Govenor Scott is rated lowest in popularity of the govenors of all 50 states. To me that's a good thing. That means he's pissin people of with his agenda. So far he's pissed off state workers, educators, and a multtude of others. He must be doing something right to draw all that negative attention. Somebody has to make the tough choices. Now it can be the recipient of public assistance. Do I want to get high or do I want to get money from the gubment?

I like it. I wish we'd just make an effort here to not shell out welfare to people who don't live in this state. It's ridiculous.

The illegal alien thing isn't the issue many make it out to be.

Thanks to better tracking, the use of stolen or made up SSNs has been slowed, a lot.

That was always the way we tracked illegals when I did id theft investigations. It was almost too easy... there would be 40 people, using the same alias and SSN... raid? Go for it, here's the list. Oh, and over time, we had prints to go with! It was like shooting fish in a barrel.

You just needed to take the time, be patient, let them screw up.

As for welfare, it is a helper, not a way of life. I prefer to wrap welfare around job training or even community service. And not just for the parents - for the kids, too. They can give back. I swear, bring the brats to the park on a Saturday, let them help clean up and paint the place. Child labor my ass, it's all about getting something back and learning a work ethic they may not learn otherwise. At the same time, if that kid helped paint the park, he may not be in such a hurry to vandalize it.
