Mizzou89 | 89 LT1 won't stay running | ||

I have an 89 with minimal actual miles. I took out for a spin a couple of weeks ago. Took it to the store, when I came back it would not start. Checked battery, Fuel pump, plugs all the usual suspects. Had it towed to repair shop. They ran diagnosis and changed out two injectors, computer and new jet chip. Seemed to run fine, until they test drove and it stopped running after 15 minutes. They tried to restart and it would not. They ran additional diagnosis and could not diagnosis any problems. After it sits for 15-20 minutes it will restart and run for 15 minutes then die and not restart. Disconnecting the battery and re connecting will reset and get it start after 20 minutes or so, but then same thing. Any ideas? thanks!!!

sounds like the coil to me since its heat related, but I've never heard of an 89 LT1

I have read about this problem on other forums and it was often blamed on the Theft Deterrent System. On mine the horn honks and the car will not start unless both doors are locked and then unlocked with the key. Maybe latter years it shuts down. I don't know and maybe everything I've heard, read, and said is B.S..
Oh, by the way I agree with the coil as a possible problem and it would not have been an injector. |

or fuel related either for that matter. I would suspect it's ignition related from heat. Bad ignition modules and coils can test fine at room temperature though unfortunately, which makes diagnosis difficult. I had a car with this condition, I let it sit with a timing light hooked up and noticed it cut out shortly before the engine would die. I'm curious how they came to blame two injectors and the ECM. I see countless shops replace the ECM just because they can't pull a monkey code from it to tell them what to bill you for. What does the shop have to say for themselves for wasting a couple hundred bucks of yours on their misdiagnosis? If they were medical doctors, by now you'd have a colostomy bag and a replacement hip to treat your ear infection. |

BTW, did you typo and your car actually has a 92-96, or do you actually have a TPI? Or was an LT1 swap done at some point? 89s all came with L98s (TPI) with the 8 runner tubes.

Where are you? And what year and engine Corvette are you having these problems with? Have you scanned it for codes?

My 93 LT1 did the same thing, start fine, run about 15 min then die, not start until engine cool, is that similar to what you are experiencing? For mine it was the connector to the coil module. I touched and wiggled it while the engine was running, it would die instantly. I opened the connector and bent the pins slightly and it was fixed. Might try that, nothing to lose. Also wiggle other connectors in the engine bay, it may be another one, but I would bet it's the coil or module connector. Good luck.
