I clicked on the link on post #9 on the "picture" thread and now I will be calling the computer repairman. I am now using my ancient laptop. As soon as I clicked on that link in "Ultra's" post my home computer became infected with this virus. I guess my McAfee security did not catch it. I just got off the phone with my daughter who is very computer savvy and we can do nothing to remove this thing.

Found it. IT's not the pic... it's AD.MEDIA-SERVERS. My spy blocked the adds on the page. I use webroot spysweek. it blocked it.

Well my home computer is shut down now because it is totally froze up with this phony "system check" virus. Wife is gone for the day and has the phone # for the repair$$ man. No cell phone either. Living in the stone age has it's inconveniences at times.

I guess a virus could be implanted in just one pixil in a photo. You never know.

The new ROGUE viruses are implanted by simply passing your cursor across the advertisement.
Websites sell advertising space to an agency that rotates ads from a variety of agencies. If one of these ads is not legit, then you get infected.

THE BEST WAY TO STOP this is by installing Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome and using the "ADBLOCK" add-on. This add-on will only load into the browser those files that come directly from the website your requesting. ALL OTHER advertisements are ignored.

Now for those making their living selling ad space this is not a good thing. BUT! For us out here trying to keep our PCs running this is a very good tool.

I also suggest that you load Malwarebytes and subscribe to their "protection service". This product uses a black list of known bad sites that your PC may try to establish a connection with. The product blocks the connect attempt and warns with a simple balloon that the connection has been thwarted.

One personal note: I do not recommend that all-in-one products like Norton 360 and McAfee. These are very CPU intensive products and will cripple older PC's. There a re a lot of great "free" versions of Avast, AVG and others that will help you keep the bad guys away without slowing your computer.

I personally run Avast and Malwarebytes on my equipment and have been very fortunate for the past 3 years.

KNOCK-ON-WOOD!!!

Good Luck

I got something like this, and was able to do a system restore back a few days earlier, I renewed my anti-virus software, so far it hasn't been an issue..

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, free, Window's firewall, free, Adaware, free, Firefox w/ Adblock, free, and Spybot...free...but only if I am seeing symptoms of an impending infection.

I have not had a virus or related problem in at least 6 years on this machine under my watch and the watch of the above listed free programs.

BTW, I am also VERY careful what I click on and when.

Spybot is a lot like Spysweep. Probably have very similar levels of protection.

As far as AVG, I used to be a huge fan. I used it on all of my machines. I found out that their definitions are not current unless you have the paid package. Kind of like giving away expired milk for free and selling the good milk.

I understand that kind of practice and would have signed up for paid AVG, but I learned that Microsoft has current and up to date protection for free for anyone with a valid copy of Windows and IE on their machine.

The switch was simple and easy, and I have found after using both that I am much happier with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I hate IE. With every fiber of my being. It's a system pig and just not very efficent. I also hate the way it nannies you.

I use Google Chrome.

I have heard the same thing about AVG... I have been debating swapping over to Avast... donno yet.

I refuse to use either Nortons or McAfee. They are both real system pigs... slow... yuck.
