Andrew How do I get the blasted coil wire on the opti!!???

I'm replacing a bunch of maintenance stuff and against my better judgment; I pulled the plug wire that goes from the coil to the opti. It was a pain in the rear to get the wire behind the top coolant hose, but manageable. I got the plug secured to the coil, but I cannot get the plug to seat on the opti. What's the trick???

Be sure the connector on the wire is centered in the boot. Is it going off to one side of the pin on the opti. It is easier to reach it from the front instead of the top of the engine.

I got the boot over the opti nipple, I just cannot get enough leverage on the wire to seat it. Is there a tool or tick to getting the leverage?

Maybe one of those cheapie plug wire boot pliers would work, if it'll fit in there. My car is in its winter coma, so I can't check.

You can try a long punch and push on the back of the boot. I just had to put my vacuum line on that sits behind the coil wire. It was not fun, and I wish I would of remembered it earlier.

I've used needle nose pliers and relied upon the stiffness of the wires, grasping the wire 4" away from the boot. It worked only when I held my tongue in a certain position.

Luck.

Thanks all; you gave me the guidance I needed! Tyler, the vacuum line you were describing that was tough to install, was the problem. There is a vacuum line that wrapped around the nipple, on the motor side. With the line, the boot would not seat because the vacuum line wouldn't allow it. I had to get a really long, thin, standard screwdriver, hold the vacuum line on the block, and then use clam's approach. It worked after a few tries.

I would have never seen that line without a spotlight shining at the opti.

Why, why did GM place that thing where they did!!

Here is a picture of my progress. Kind of a mess right now. It'll be done by Saturday, but I'm done for the day...

Anyone who owns a C4 with a LT1 should have a p/s pully puller in their box, $25.

10 min. pull the belt, tensioner and pully = full access to the opti. Easy.

Good luck on the maintenance work Andrew. I have been fighting my own problem on the 84, MICE...I found droppings, insulation and a nest (was empty). I now have 5 dead mice and haven't seen any evidence of others. I haven't pulled the seats to look under them yet or have checked the blower motor another favorite spot for them I guess. I believe the only electrical trouble so far is the radio won't come on, the car will start and the gauges and dash lights work so I am hoping it's just wires ate...I am thinking of coming out to the corvette cup again possibly, haven't decided yet. Good Luck with your work and your car is still one of my favorites. Later... Dale

Oooo, mice can be nasty! Sounds like you caught it in time and glad to hear that not much damage was done.

Project update... everything is back in, MSD Dig 6al plus installed, and even took the car for a very short drive yesterday. I still have to dress up and clean up the wiring and work area, but the majority is done.

Now on to the high rpm oil pressure problem....
