Ok guys as mentioned in the daily chat my alternator died on the way home from work.

I'm not getting the auto zone replacement.
I was thinking of getting a replacement from rock auto.

Matt suggested the CS144.

Question is where would I get one?

Other suggestions are welcome.

For those to lazy to read signature car is an 85.

I'm in the local starter, alternator, generator repair shop crowd. Probably a quick turn around there and you know everything fits because it's yours.

For the easiest route, napa or a rebuilder that is local to you. The CS144 can be found online or at the parts store, and requires minor modifications (measuring and filing) od the case and bracket.

Check with K&B. They sell GM/ACDelco/Delphi parts. All new. All to OEM standard (whatever the hell that really means).

I would suspect a fresh OEM alternator will do all you need. The 1985 wasn't filled with as much computer power as the later cars, so it's kinda lost on them.

I put a 144 on my 92, and can't complain, but for me, it's an easy swap.

You can look at Powermaster, but they are EXPENSIVE.

GM replacement would be nice but not required. The stock one is only 108 amps. The replacements I've seen are 120 amps which should be more than adequate. I don't have window shattering stereo.

Glad to hear it! Do you have a serpentine belt tool? If not, I highly recommend having that - you can rent it from AZ or buy one for $20 at HF.

First time I did my alternator I used a socket adapter and vise-grips. Not the best method, but works in a pinch.

No, not on the later cars. It's a 16mm nut.

It is a 1/2" square head in the tensioner on the L98s at least. But the serpentine belt tool has an adjustable end that lets you get in there better without hitting the other pulleys and is much easier to use.

That's JG Wentworth. Good job, Andy. Way to go putting a technical thread way off topic from the original intended purpose. I hope Mike isn't mad at you
