Well... a little research goes a long way...
The numbers have moved. No longer are they on the RF head pad, they are now down by the oil filter. And no, they are not easy to find! But, once found, confirms that my engine is the original to the car. A few observations: 1. The 1996 engine is a ton smoother, I suspect that GM simply got better at assembly over time. 2. The 1996 is also a chunk more energetic. I suspect my old motor, with 185k miles on it, was about dead to the world. Meaning, losing compression... things just not right; cause it made all sorts of funny noises that the new engine doesn't make. That's it! |

I personally felt that 1996 was a turning point and GM was hitting it's stride with their roller motors. I believe that was when they started manufacturing the Vortec family of SBC engines and I feel they were a step forward in how there were engineered.

By 96 GM had the new PM Rods and Lighter Hyper pistons figured out 100% with the LTX and L31's...
I honestly believe most of the LTX balancing problems were due to them changing in the middle of LTX production from the old forged rods to the PM rods... BUT the LTX's unkeyed hub and pulley/balancer combination on the front was a totally new concept on a SBC and didn't help either. No doubt a 180K mile engine is no match for a low mileage one in the power dept. I'm really glad you got your car back running and this engine you've had sitting for so long is still good as new. They changed how they balanced them
Dynamic run then balance. So if you need to remove the balancer, mark it, since they are NOT keyed. Glad your happy |

Brian - marking the front balancer is insanely important. It is required on all LT1/4 motors (can't speak of the LT5, I really wish it had a different letter designation, L32, for being a 32 valve engine, cause it shared zero with the LT1/4 engine).
You mark the arrow on the hub to the balancer. Remove the balancer and then mark the hub to the timing cover. Make sure you don't clean them off!!! Clean first, especially the area where you want to mark - grime builds up down there big time. Use a good paint pen designed for this; they are available at most auto parts stores. |

Seems to me that the stock balancer only fit on the hub one way due to the layout of the hub arms. Since I didn't want any issues at 7,000+ rpm I ditched the stock balancer I went with a keyed ATI damper. The Brian Ebert balanced rotating assembly doesnt hurt longevity either. Mike |

sorry... you can mount the balancer on the hub anywhere... Unless the bolts are different, I was able to spin the balancer all the way around the hub.
I mark both, it's easier to see in the dark!! |

Only fits on the 3 bolt locations

duh, Brian... but at the same time, if you mis-align the balancer and put it on wrong, you will be vibrating all over the place... this is why I mark the balance to the hub.
