My next venture is to adjust the valves on my 94 c-4 I have no problems attempting it but I need some advise on the myths that were recomended to me. One recomendation was to find TDC, use the spin method and adjust valves intake 1,2,5,7 and exhaust 1,3,4,8 THEN rotate the crank one full turn and set all the rest. The other recomendation was to set TDC, do #1, rotate 1/4 turn, do number 8, turn 1/4 turn, do number 4, etc.etc. 3,6,5,7,2, with a 1/4 turn in between. Which is believed the best way. TDC do intake 1257, exhaust 1348, one full turn do exhaust 1,3,4,8 OR turn 1,4 turn between each 18,4,3,6,5,7,2, adjustment. If you have done this I am sure understand what I am trying to ask. Any advise is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Woody

Yea, doing it static is a base setting, you need to do it again running if you do it this way.

Rocker arm clips help the oil thing.

Doing it running is nice but inconvenient on our cars with all the brackets and crap in the way of the valve covers.

When I did mine I did it the first way you have posted...do 4 then turn over the motor and do the other 4. Just be careful when setting them with the engine cold that you don't over compress (collapse) the lifter.

Btw, I have no problems that I know of from setting them that way.

I now see why and agree that adjusting the valves running and hot is the best way to go, I do have a couple of questions first,

What is the best valve cover gaskets for the LT-1 ?

before I take the covers off I want to buy and cut up an old set to prevent the oil spill, so I want everything ready ahead of time, which includes making the welded handle on the socket, What size socket fits the stem nut?

What size allen wrench locks down the set screw?

Simple questions for those that know, tough for those that dont. I could not have gotten this far on my 94 vette project without great guys like yourself. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, I appreciate it
Thanks again,
Woody

Thanks, I just ordered the gasket set you recomended (VS50443R),
If anyone has an old set of beaten up trash valve covers they would like to sell, please get in touch with me. I am going to cut them up for valve adjustment access.
Thanks

Hi Woody,

You have center-bolt valve covers......which means you'd need to cut around the holes in order to access the rocker nuts yet still have enough meat to bolt down the covers?

I've never heard of this being done, and I suspect it won't actually work because the metal would not sustain enough hold-down pressure to seal the gasket.

What I do is warm up the motor, take one cover off, adjust, then replace cover. Repeat on other side. Then I let cool down and simple green and hose down each side.

Yea, it would be tough to fab a set of center bolt covers for this. I've used this type of deflectors years ago with the stamped steel rockers, not sure if they would work on the later style such as yours.

Thank you, Now I understand, I will probably end up just placing a piece of cardboard to deflect the oil spray.

I do have another question, On the drivers side, I believe I have to remove the alternator and a/c bracket to give removal clearance for the valve cover, Can I squeeze the cover off or am I correct in that the bracket has to be completely removed, then put back on to run the car for the valve adjustment, then removed the bracket again to replace the cover, or is there an easier way. You have been a great help, Thanks I appreciate your time.

I leave my alternator off, do the adjustment, then re-install everything.
It only takes about 5 minutes to adjust each side.

I can see doing it with the alternator off if you have an electric water pump, but doesn't the water overheat with no belt on the water pump.

You aren't really putting a load on the engine and it's for a short period of time, I wouldn't worry about it.

No, that's the thing with our LT1's....the pump is gear driven.

Yep...no belt for waterpump....

One other tip is I place a couple of rags over the rockers and remove the rag from the pair I'm adjusting, replace rag and move on. Seems to keep oil off of my headers, and as previously mentioned with the alternator off it only takes a couple of minutes per side.

I have done it both running and not running. I had very little oil splash with it running. Here is a video (not mine)

That vid is very disconcerning.
I mean that there so little oil being pumped around there.
Why is it so damn hard to keep the oil under the valve covers then?!?

When you rev the engine, the oil comes out faster. It will also pool in the head and leak around the gaskets.
