For me, hearing a particular song can key off absolutely visceral memories ...

... it is the mid 2000s. Ivelis and I are in the 2003 convertible, top down, moving fast somewhere out in the mid-west. The bruising (little if any refinement) Bose stereo is on and turned up, meeting (superbly) the only real design brief it has: to be heard clearly at 80 mph with the top down.

The CD changer (remember those?) has Real Life by Simple Minds on and Jim Kerr is singing:

All my love, you're the best,
Every little thing that I possess,
It's all emotion when you take control,
I can feel wild horses running in my soul.

The wind whistles and buffets us and the LS1 rumbles gently and the trick paint glistens in the bright sun.

Quit dreaming this is real life baby

One night on the 60's on 6 they were doing old rock and roll recordings of actual broadcasts from a given night in the 60's....they would do these from big RR radio stations around the country. I tuned in and it was KOMA night out of Oklahoma City....total flashback.....no kidding it gave me goose bumps.

Out here and all the way up to Canada my generation grew up on KOMA at night while crusing the main drag of what ever town we were in.... 1560 on the dial but you just put it over around 1600 to bring it in... 50K watts directional to the northwest....

KOMA was an open channel after sundown. That and 89 WLS, Chicago were the stations we listened to.

WLS is still broadcasting here in Chicago. Funny thing is now when they play the songs, the DJ says "We debuted this on WLS when it was new"...lol.

A friend of mine and I were driving around in early 1984. He was having girl problems and I was trying to give him advice.

Risky Business had come out the previous August, and definitely spoke to us suburban white boys. We finished the discussion with me saying "Sometimes you just gotta say, "What the !@#$"." I leaned over and turn on the radio just as the distinctive beginning chords of Bob Seger's Old Time Rock and Roll kicked in. My friend actually had to pull the car over for a couple of minutes ...

There was also a station in Boston that we could get in central DE.

But yes, music and smells... they will bring back a feeling no matter how deeply stored.

that's cause you take care of it and don't smoke! Good things no matter what!

A couple of years ago, my brother and his wife came to visit us here in SoCal. I took them to the Queen Mary for the day. I sailed on her in 1966, I was all of 11 months old! However, the smell on board was so very familiar... creepy how that stuck with me.

Very true. I sailed on board the USS Coral Sea (CV-43). To this date, any World War Two ship (whether it be destroyer, submarine, or aircraft carrier) brings back the same evocative smells.

Wow Gris....I'm surprised they had radios back when you were young.........

I figured that your first recollections were of you being in a wagon charging across the prairie trying to find a homestead....
