Speeder hits 200 km/h
OPP say it may be record for local driver nabbed by police Trevor Wilhelm, Windsor Star Published: Friday, April 11, 2008 KINGSVILLE - A Kingsville man temporarily lost his Corvette and his licence Wednesday after police caught him driving on a rural road at 200 km/h -- the highest area OPP officers remember. It was 120 km/h over the posted speed limit. "This is extreme speed, for an excuse of being late for work," said OPP Const. Janet Hayes. "Just unacceptable. That's 120 kilometres over the speed limit. The officer got him on radar at 139 kilometres. Then he sped up. The officer is pacing him, and he has his lights on because he doesn't stop immediately. He finally stops and says 'Oh yah, I'm late for work.'" A Kingsville officer clocked the driver around noon Wednesday on Road 3 West. The speed limit is 80 km/h. After the officer clocked him, the driver sped up, said Hayes. The officer pulled out to stop him, and the Corvette kept going. The officer chased the Corvette, which reached speeds of 200 km/h before eventually stopping at the intersection of County Road 23. John Cervini, 37, of Erie Street in Leamington, is charged with street racing. Police also suspended his licence for seven days and impounded his car. "We've seen a lot of fatal crashes in that area," said Hayes. "Travelling at that rate of speed, if you were to collide with anything, it wouldn't be pretty. This high rate of speed on a county road where you have children, you have other motorists and the ditches are very deep -- for the safety of other motorists and children, we're very upset about that." NOT THE FIRST This wasn't the first high-miler police have caught on area roads. Last month, OPP caught someone doing 171 km/h in a posted 60-km/h zone on County Road 43 in Tecumseh. Hayes said they also recently caught someone else doing 187 km/h in a 50-km/h zone. In a crackdown Wednesday, Windsor police nabbed a driver going 144 km/h on the E.C. Row Expressway. On Tuesday, they also caught someone doing 120 km/h on South National Street, where the speed limit is 50 km/h. Gotta Keep This Stuff On The Track........... |

Dude that's only 120 mph in a 50mph zone. He'd still be driving had he pulled over in the first place.
Cops take it personal when you run from them, but I know they're secretly hoping you do. |

Speeding that fast here is taken very seriously because of the amount of deaths attributed to street racing.
Since he was 50 KPH over the posted speed limit he loses his license on the spot along with the car and is charged with street racing. Having been charged with street racing the Province may crush his car!!!! That's why it's not a good day for this Dude Gary |

Coming to America soon, I'm sure. I'm ok with the license suspension. 70mph over the limit is pretty reckless, and obviously willful speeding. But I also am a firm believer in private property rights. It's HIS car. When the state can and does take your property... well, it's just a way of signifying your lack of freedom. Socialism is just a few steps from communism. |

From what I know about the street racing law before they crush your car they review the case and the drivers driving record. They make a determination based on the facts about said driver. If however while "street racing" an accident happens and causes death you could pretty well count on your car being crushed. As far as a lack of freedom is concerned if I were to lay blame on anyone for the government taking this approach I would say to point the finger at the activists groups. MADD, CRASH, etc. These groups seeem to put so much pressure on the government that they react right or wrong just to take action and to show that they have done something. Personnally if someone killed a family member of mine while street racing, having thier car crushed by the government would be the least of thier problems..... |

You sort of seem to muddy the waters. Street racing is a dangerous activity. Defining 70 mph over the limit as street racing, no problem there. Suspension of license for a dangerous activity, check. Crushing one's car? That's bs. If you had enough property, you could drive that car on your property and not be in violation of any law, even without a license. Killing someone while street racing? That's murder. Personal accountability. The person should pay the price. It's the communist and socialist countries that tie personal property into law enforcement. If you have a large party and disturb the neighbors, should they take your house? Surely that would stop you from having disorderly parties? |

Hmmmm, approximately $200 fine, versus crushing a $40,000 vehicle. Ok, you win, it's the same. |

The car crushing thing is BS. Who ever thought of that should be shot. Street racing too IMO is BS as well. If you are racing you have to be doing it against someone else otherwise your racing yourself which by definition is practically impossible unless you are trying to break a record.

These young bastards think their driving a video game and have NO RESPECT WHATSOEVER for other drivers and the law. The only justice to their actions is that they usually end up dead, but take an innocent bystander as well. IMO they should crush their peckers while they watch their car. |
