Anybody else got splotchy paint? Ever tried wet sanding to take the factory finish down? What grit did you use?
Funny - the owner's manual says something about chemical paint spotting, and warranty coverage. Did the finish coat break down real easy? First, I tried polishing compound. Then rubbing compound. Then 2000 grit. And every time you go stronger, you have to completely re-do it step-wise backward. I did the whole roof panel with 2000, then rubbing compound, then polishing compound, and got a near-perfect waxable finish, except a few of the spots remain. Anybody ever gone to 1800 without having to take it in and get it sprayed afterward? |

I don't know what you mean by splotchy? Any pics?
FWIW when I had mine detailed this summer and he clay barred the entire thing it came out looking great - but that's for environmental defects in the paint, not really paint problems themselves. I'd like to see what you mean, though. Matthew |

My polo isn't splotchy, it's just beat all to shit. Past wet sanding, rubbing out, buffing, waxing and polishing. It'd been rode hard and put away wet before I got it and I ain't done it no favors since. F'k it, it's just a machine....

Well, that was useful ... NOT. Some people take pride in how their ride looks. Hopefully, Flashman will pipe in with some great information. Are your paint problems in the clearcoat only or do they affect the base coat? You can only wet sand once or, if you're lucky twice, before you start to sand through the paint and cause even worse problems. Sounds like you've done it twice already. I'd avoid doing it the third time. |

Yeah - I suppose so. But everything is perfect mechanically (until I pick up grizzly's headers here), and clean is the only thing left. I can't get the spots to show in a pic. It's like a drop of weak acid hit it and ate up the clear coat. Can't even feel it, but you sure can see it. What grit strength is a clay bar? |

A clay bar has no grit, it's what you use before any sanding or polishing. It's used to remove foreign maretial on the paint surface beforehand. Liquid similar to Quick Detail is sprayed on and then the clay is rubbed over it. The clay picks up the crap. It works extremely well. Unfortunately, it's of no use in your situation. Qack had a good question for you on the clearcoat and how much of it's left. When you used the 2000, did you get any color in the water or was it just white from the clear? What it really sounds like to me is hard water spots. These are a real bitch because the hard water eats into the clearcoat. It will even eat into the window glass and it's almost impossible to remove. I had them on my 92, it took 2 or 3 times sanding & polishing to get them out and I know my clear's really thin now. I wouldn't go to a harsher grit, you can end up with sand scratches that are even harder to get out. Hopefully you're using a foam sanding block with the 2000. Good Luck |

No color in the mix, just lots of white pasty jam. No foam block either, and I DO have some. Didn't think about that, and I can tell where my fingers were on the paper. It took a second rubdown with the rubbing compound to wipe the 'rings'. Hard water? I guess that's possible, but I sure can't see that... The original owner lived in Plymouth NC, and they got a Weyerhauser wood products facility there. Chemicals in the rain? |

No color in the mix, then you're still on the clear, that's good. Keep your eye on it because rubbing compoumd is really abrasive. I usually use Miguar's (now 3M) medium or fine cut cleaners. I like the way the abrasvies thin out as you polish.
Don't discount the hard water thing. Hard water's almost every where in the country and causes more paint problems than the acid rain. The minerals do eat into the paint especially if the previous owner let the water drops dry on the car. You may not have it in your area but if you know anyone that has a water softener, you probably do. Another place you can check is the Miguars web site. It's pretty good. And they do have techs that can answer specifics. |

If they are indeed water spots or similar, Malco makes a product for such spots that works on both paint and glass. I've not tried it yet but what I've used of their stuff has been pretty good. They have a ton of automotive chemical products.

Cool, I'll hit that site in a bit.
Meguiars made a water spot cleaner but it didn't work very well. On glass, the vinagar solutions work good if the spots are newer. The best thing I've used on glass is chrome polish. But if the glass is etched, nothing will take the spots completle off. |
