Hey Guys,
Is your 6 speed noisy at idle (w/Dual Mass flywheel)?

Mine's quiet with clutch in, but quite noisy at idle. I wonder if my cam is causing it?

Mine makes more noise with the clutch out in neutral - I think it's fairly normal.

pretty quite.

A had a tick, tick, tick after I did the clutch once.

Turned out a dented the dust cover putting in on.

Easy enough to fix.

it sometimes means you are low on transmission oil.

I'm thinking my cam may be the primary cause? Off idle (1,800+) it quiets down considerably.
If it idled with a stock cam, the dual mass would be doing it's thing in keeping constant load on the tranny input shaft. With my lumpy cam, perhaps the mass is 'thrown around' a bit? Just a thought.

Man.....if I knew this level of noise wouldn't be worse with an aluminum flywheel.....I'd go for one!

they do sound like shit with the aluminum. It is no gauge of future lifespan.

The design causes the rattles...

When it stops going into gear, won't come out of gear or when it pops out of gear, that's when the problems start.

+1

When I had my 89 it always rattled with the stock dual mass, and it was loud.

Also, at WOT in First and Second Gear the trans wined; it caused the same sound the SVT Cobra makes only it wasn't supercharged and the noise was coming from the transmission..... I liked it, made me feel special!

Is this a black tag thing? I only notice gear whine when I'm moving, and only barely. Not something you would tolerate on a Honda Accord, but it doesn't bother me. No noises at idle as far as I've noticed.

Black tag boxes will have a little whine associated with them. Just due to the straighter cut teeth on the gears. Also a little rattle is normal with a dual mass if you have changed out the cam. Stock it should be fairly quiet.

If it is making noise on you, push the clutch in and suck it up.
