I'm set up to order a set of AFR 1040's. They have the L98 plug angle and have "raised exhaust ports". Not sure what the raised exhaust ports entails. Will these heads work with my Hooker super comp 2151 headers? Will my exhaust need modified due to the exhaust ports being higher? I'm afraid my header collector will be higher and my exhaust will hit my shift linkage (700R4 trans). The 2151's and exhaust fit great on my 113 heads, will they fit the same on the AFR's?

I believe they are 1/4 inch higher than stock, part of how they get their numbers. That was my recollection when I was considering them. The exhaust ports are not in the stock position.

Don't know if that will effect fit, they are spaced the same as far as bolt pattern goes. If were my headers, it would not be a problem. The collector will be pitched slightly differently, which could cause a problem based on the headers.

If it were that big of a problem, we'd all know about it. I can't see how it would be an issue.

So, is this what you expected when you saw my name in the last post section?

I can't say for sure but I do know that the Hooker SCs have an oval port flange which seems to give them good versatility. LT1s have higher ports than the L98s that the Hookers were designed for. But in spite of that, the Hookers are widely used on LT1s.

That is what I was thinking and hoping but I didn't want to be bolting up the headers and have an "ooh, shit" moment.

.100 is nothing that a BFH can't adjust for on the exhaust, I guess, if I have to go that route.

This is what I was hoping for. Good advice pertaining to the question asked, whether you agree, disagree or are indifferent about the choice. Posts like this one are why I grew to like you over a year ago when I first got to know you. I'm glad all the other stuff is ancient history and we are all back on track to being the best Tech forum on the web.

The best tech forum with the best moderators, I might add.

New leaf. Just don't start telling me how you have 10X more power because of the choice, and we'll be fine!!

A year ago I wasn't trying to build a motor and was relentlessly accosted by people to do it a certain way.

I just went into the Summit site and looked and that's what it says (.100"), although I cannot verify that.

I'll have way more power!!!! My AFR will give me way more power. (My Air Fuel Ratio will give me way more power since 50% of the air will come from nitrous!)

That would be great. I really didn't want to spring for new headers right now. I'm coming in a little under budget, even after I put in that constant pressure valvebody, but I'm sure the trans or rear will need replaced in fairly short order so I need to save a little cabbage. I'm hoping to get a summer of fun and a few track days out of my new engine before I need to replace the trans or rear. Time will tell.

My trans didn't last 300 miles....start saving faster.

I can't seem to find anyone that can tell me whether or not the constant pressure valvebody will help the stock trans live. In theory, the higher line pressure and no chance of a low line pressure should keep the bands tight and eliminate slippage under high power, while allowing part throttle shift point adjustability. In theory. I'm going to be the guinea pig I guess since I can't find a single soul who has tried it. My stock trans is healthy, no slippage at all and just ran an 11.43 1/4 mile. I'll spring the $240 and try it and report back. I'll either find a good way to make all our 700R4's last a little longer with more power or I'll waste $240.

I'm not optimistic.

I talked to too many trans people it's not going to happen.

I'll learn a whole bunch about tires too by the time I'm done.

Excellent choice! If you want detailed answers just give Tony at AFR a shout. Great customer service.

Or better yet pm TPI421Vette. He has done many motors, and primarly uses AFR's for obvious reasons.

I got an email back from my friend, he recalls it to be .25 inches also. So you have summit at .1 and our recollection at .25.

Pick one. Whatever they are, they aren't in the stock location and the result is, if this is going into a C4, many headers come close to the frame, the height may actually help that some.

.100 or .250 it isn't going to matter. There is plenty of clearance in the tunnel for the pipes.

180 and 195 street heads are raised .100 (very marginal).

The 210 and 227's are raised the additional .150 (.250 total).

No one has any issue with the exhaust port height and neither will you so get the rest of your "T"'s crossed and the "I"'s dotted and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps...

Tony

Yes, received them Thursday. Nice looking heads! Can't wait to get the new mill in and done. Starting on it first week in January and should have a few days off work to get a good head start.

Check them carefully. CNC castings often have small pieces of metal ready to "flick " off.
I once had a new set of cylinder heads require total disassembly to properly clean the debris trapped in them.
Be sure yours are clean before installing.
If you stick your finger into a port, and wipe it around look carefully for minute shavings. If your finger looks like you painted it with silver paint, you have 4 hours of work ahead of you.

They seem really clean, I am going to go over them to make sure no little flicks or filings are going to come off but there is no dust or anything, I've reached up in all the ports. I was mainly looking for a sharp edge or a metal shard but all seems fine. I'll also shop-vac all the ports out before I install and I'll rinse everything good.

I purchased from Summit Racing. I paid their advertised price (1440.95) plus $9.95 in handling. They did not charge the $14 "additional handling fee may apply" charge. They were here the day after I ordered them. The deal Jim was giving was much better than Summit but the shipping was the killer.

Anxious to hear your results and driving impressions...We hear about a lot buying them but not many completed and driving yet. Like your bare bones approach to things.

Thanks!! I will definitely keep you all updated on the build. I will have timeslips from the dragstrip in the spring, I can't wait to go back. I'm addicted! Not sure yet if I'll put it on the dyno again, the main reason I set it up with the wideband LC-1 setup was so I wouldn't have to go through that expense again and still not have a part throttle tune. If I do put her on the dyno I'll post the results.
