I went up to an indoor kart place last night and tried 3 races. They have electric carts, so they move pretty well unlike the typical lawnmower carts.
I managed some sub 30 second times and made the top 10 for the week. More surprising though, are some of the names on the list: http://www.k1speed.com/scores_page/cb/WEEK_MAIN.htm Apparently Eddie Cheever Jr himself was there earlier in the day from Florida. (F1, Cart, IRL racer, Indy 500 winner). I'm not sure who the other Cheever is, maybe his son or dad or something. All these other guys have raced there a bazillion times, and this guy Pearlman at the top of the list is a professional kart racer, so I don't feel bad about getting beat by him, but it was fun following his line and learning some things. It's not even close to the real thing, but hey, you can bring your dad/son/girlfriend with you as long as they're at least 4' tall. |

Congrats! Carts are a blast - never tried an electric one, but I'll bet they're fun.

Did he cry foul on the weight advantage like he did with Danica?

Naw. Actually I didn't race on the track at the same time as him, he must've left about an hour before me.
Crying about weight advantages makes as much sense as a basketball player crying about being short. |

I think their goal is to give the horses an even playing field. If they could clone a jockey 12 times and train the clones to ride the same, they would.

So basically it's the same thing in race car drivers. Danica is about 30lbs less than the smallest IRL driver and shorter so she has a LCG. That is a huge advantage in a car that already weighs as little as an indy car, and having a LCG will be an added benefit. |

I can understand some advantages are beyond a person's control, but should I be handicapped because someone ate too many Krispy Kremes? Physical condition is part of the sport.
So until they install a scale and throw cinderblocks in my kart, I'll keep on lapping the fat boys. On hot air balloon rides, they charge heavy people extra. But yeah, with equal weights then I'm a horrible driver. I also got laughed at by a 10 year old with braces and headgear, and then tripped on my shoelaces in the bathroom. On the way home I got confused and lost in a culdesac and drove in a circle 6 times until I hit a light post. |

I wonder if some of them get physically exhausted after racing for 3 hours and start making mistakes. Perhaps they should hook up IVs and oxygen masks to prevent that. There's plenty of out of shape drivers in nascar, and it definitely comes into play.
I can give you my parents' address if you'd like to send them a formal complaint about my genetic makeup. |

Nice job CC. You were also faster than Josh Hayes. He is a former AMA Formula Extreme Champion with Erion Honda. He will be riding for the Factory Yamaha Team on an R1 for 2009.
Merry X-mas everybody! |

That's why F1 drivers now have such extreme physical conditioning programs. With the increase in car performance, the driver had to be in shape. Otherwise they are dead at the end of a race. As I understand it, from an article I read in Road & Track a bunch of years ago, a modern F1 drivers heart rate sustains at nearly 200 BPM for upwards of 90 minutes. Their cardio condition is beyond question. Parker Johnstone used to race IMSA back in the day, and his resting heart rate was about 40 BPM. |
