Someone I know and who is pretty smart on POLITICAL issues made the following comment:
Quote: do you want to reduce the CO2 emissions from your car? I know Andy is up on converters. I don't think the statement holds water. Anyone? |

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) isn't environmentally harmful, so reducing Co2 by removing the converter doesn't help or hurt the environment; assuming it's something the engine even produces.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the main pollutant, the pollutant which a catalytic converter is designed to reduce. Assuming your acquaintance really meant CO instead of CO2 (not knowing the difference and using the terms interchangeably causes some pretty serious detriment to his arguement - or to a lesser degree interchanging the terms accidentally causes me to doubt his knowledge base) he is wrong on several levels. In short The idea of a cat adding anything to the exhaust (adding Co2 as he states) is not correct. A converter can not add anything to the exhaust. |

The converter converts CO to CO2, so it really does increase the amount of C02. |

You say tomatoe, I say tomato.
From a purely semantics based stand point, the acquaintace of the original poster is correct. CO2 will be higher after the cat than before. However, his intentioned argument is that emissions will be better (less harmful to the universe) with no converter. |

Yeah, that's true alright, and it's an incomplete statement. Let's make it a positive statement: "CO2 is NECESSARY for plant life." |

Creating CO2 via catalytic converter is not necessary for plant life.

Make a deal... I won't tell the plants where the CO2 came from if you don't?
EDIT: Some people talk to plants. All bets are off. |

This is getting messy.
Cats do create CO2. It's a byproduct of burning a fossil fuel. By using the fuels, results in the release of said carbons. However, CO2 is harmful, by increasing greenhouse gases. The downside is that the other toxins stopped by cats far outweighs anything the cats may produce. I would much rather have a little C02 vs a lot of everything else. Uncontrolled emissions are cancer causing... CO2 is not. |

Well this thread does remind me of the day I caught Ron's cats having sex on my exhaust
Hopefully this won't be the result. |
